Ever since landing her breakout role as Shug in the 2005 musical drama Hustle & Flow, Taraji P. Henson has become one of the most successful and in-demand actresses in Hollywood. Three years later in 2008, Henson earned an Academy Award nomination for her supporting role opposite Brad Pitt in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

In 2016, Henson won a Golden Globe award for her commanding turn as Cookie Lyon on the hit Fox series Empire. Up next for Henson is a date with The Minions: The Rise of Gru, in which she’ll play new series character Belle Bottom. The film is expected to hit theaters on July 2, 2021.

10 The Good Doctor (2011) – 66%

Not to be confused with the TV series of the same name, The Good Doctor is a dramatic thriller starring Orlando Bloom as a duplicitous, power-hunger M.D. who fancies playing god.

When young British med student Martin Blake (Bloom) begins his residency in California, he immediately tests the limits of his power. Dr. Blake nurses a woman named Diane through her kidney transplant, bolstering his reputation as a hero. However, Blake goes to great lengths to keep Diane infirmed so that he can continually nurse her back to health and reap the heroic rewards. Henson plays Nurse Theresa, one of many orderlies who is put off by Dr. Blake.

9 The Karate Kid (2010) – 66%

In Harald Zwart’s remake of The Karate Kid, Henson plays Sherry Parker, a single mother forced to relocate to China with her 12-year-old son Dre (Jaden Smith).

When they arrive in China, Dre feels out of place with no friends in sight. He’s soon befriended by Mr. Han, a Kung Fu expert who teaches Dre how to honorably defend himself. With Dre’s growing confidence comes a budding romance with a local Chinese girl named Meiying (Wenwen Han). In the end, Dre enters a Kung Fu tournament for ultimate respect.

8 Date Night (2010) – 66%

In the screwball rom-com Date Night, Steve Carell and Tina Fey play a staid married couple whose lives are thrown into an adventurous tailspin following a case of mistaken identity. Henson plays Detective Arroyo, one of the law officers tasked with trying to make sense of the complicated crime story.

When Phil and Claire decide to shake up their boring lives by enjoying a date night on the town, they bite off more than they can chew when pretending to be a couple named for dinner reservations at an upscale restaurant. The ruse leads to a run-in with corrupt cops, organized criminals, and the like.

7 Kevin Hart: Laugh At My Pain (2011) – 71%

Before Kevin Hart rose to international superstardom, Henson appeared as a bank teller named Taraji in the stand-up comedian’s breakout concert film, Laugh at My Pain.

The film is largely considered to be Kevin Hart’s rise to international fame. The film earned more than $7 million in worldwide grosses, quite a feat for a documentary stand-up feature. Henson is joined by Larry King, as well as a slew of audience members that includes Shaquille O’Neal, Sanna Lathan, DeSean Jackson, Boris Kodjoe, and more.

6 Baby Boy (2001) – 71%

After spending a half-decade cutting her teeth on television, Henson made her big-screen debut in John Singleton’s 2001 drama Baby Boy.

Set in South Central Los Angeles, the film concerns Jody Summers (Tyrese Gibson), an unemployed 20-year-old black man who is forced to grow up in a hurry when life presents him the overwhelming challenges of adulthood. 5 The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button (2008) – 72%

Based on the short story written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button imagines a rare human condition in which a man ages in reverse, beginning life as an elderly man and ending it as a near newborn.

Directed by David Fincher, the film went on to score 13 Academy Award nominations, including Best Supporting actress for Henson, who plays Benjamin’s (Brad Pitt) adoptive mother Queenie. The film won three Oscars, including Best Art Direction, Makeup, and Visual Effects.

4 Hustle & Flow (2005) – 83%

Henson rose to prominence in Hollywood following her soulful turn in Craig Brewer’s Hustle & Flow, a redemption story about a Memphis pimp who turns his life around to become a successful rapper.

With bills piling up and babies to feed, Djay (Terrence Howard) knows he can’t keep his life as a street hustler for much longer. As such, he links up with childhood friend Key (Anthony Anderson) and begins recording a hip-hop demo en route to chasing his dreams as a rapper. Although it’s been criticized for undermining its message by hiring a male director (Tom Donahue), This Changes Everything is a documentary that explores gender parity in Hollywood. Henson joins a bevy of high-profile actors that voice their support for the cause.

With Reese Witherspoon, Shonda Rhimes, Tracee Ellis Ross, Jessica Chastain, Patty Jenkins, Meryl Streep, Rashida Jones, and more, the film exposes the rampant disparity between male and female filmmakers in the movie industry.

Although she has partaken in an episode of The Simpsons and such spin-off shorts as Madly Madagascar and The Ice Age: The Great Egg-Scapade, Henson made her feature-length animated movie debut in Ralph Breaks the Internet.

In the sequel to the crowd-pleasing Wreck it Ralph, the titular videogame villain (John C. Reilly) gets stuck in a glitchy racing arcade game beloved by his bestie Vanellope (Sarah Silverman). Henson plays Yesss in the film, a cruel algorithm that determines the popularity of online trends.

1 Hidden Figures (2016) – 93%

Nominated for Best Picture, Hidden Figures tells the little-known true-story of African-American heroes Katherine G. Johnson (Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer), and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae), three NASA mathematicians who were instrumental in the launching a successful U.S. Space Program.

Adapted from Margaret Lee Shetterly’s book of the same name, the film properly credits the three aforementioned women for making the monumental contributions ahead of John Glenn’s successful orbit into space.
