Now that Suits is over, fans are looking back at the show and its characters with fresh eyes. On Rick Hoffman became a fan-favorite character who everyone grew to love (and also hated at some points) over the show’s nine seasons.

From his love of cats to treating his colleagues like dirt, it’s fair to say Louis Litt has had his ups and downs. Here are some of the times fans pitied him and some when they really disliked him.

10 Hated Him: When He Grilled Donna

In season 2 episode 7, ‘Sucker Punch’, a mock trial takes place after Harvey is accused of shredding a piece of evidence. One of the underlying stories of the show is the relationship between Donna and Harvey, but not just a professional relationship, a personal one as well.

When Donna refuses to answer a number of questions regarding Donna and Harvey’s work relationship, he attacks her by repeatedly asking her if she loves Harvey. A grilling that embarrassed Donna in front of numerous other partners.

One of Harvey’s love interests in the show was Louis’s sister Esther. Even after Harvey promises to Louis that he won’t get involved with Esther, he does just that. When Harvey then ends things with her she walks past Louis’s office in tears and Louis figures out what has just happened.

Louis confronts Harvey, and even mentions his parents, in his office and the two briefly engage in a fight that ends with Harvey, not throwing some of his greatest comebacks, but physically throwing Louis into a table. Even though Harvey has the right to be in and end relationships as he chooses, it’s hard not to feel bad for Louis who was simply trying to be a good brother.

8 Hated Him: When He Demanded Named Partner From Jessica

When Louis finds out Mike’s secret that he never went to Harvard, he completely turns on everyone as he feels they all betrayed him by not telling him about Mike. He treats numerous other partners and paralegals terribly and uses Mike’s secret to leverage what he wants from the other partners.

When he gets to Jessica he demands the one thing that he feels he deserves but has never gotten, his name on the door to make the firm Pearson Spectre Litt. A cold underhanded move, but that’s classic Louis.

7 Felt Sorry For Him: When Sheila Left Him

Louis’s main love interest in the series was Sheila Sazs, one of the members of the faculty at Harvard who deals with placing students at Law firms. She then moves to Columbia to deal with student admissions.

In season 3 Louis proposes to Sheila and she agrees and says she will move to New York. However, moments later Sheila and Louis end up disagreeing over having children and they decide not to be together, sending Louis into a pit of despair.

6 Hated Him: When He Left Harvey’s Salary In The Copy Machine

In season 5 episode 2, ‘Compensation’, Louis finds out that Harvey has been paying Donna’s salary and is unable to do this himself when Donna becomes Louis’ assistant, due to him making far less money than Harvey. Outraged at this Louis leaves a copy of Harvey’s salary in the copy machine for all the partners to see.

At a partner’s meeting, Jack Soloff brings up Harvey’s accounts and a motion begins to change how much money Harvey makes. Another underhanded move from Louis Litt for the sake of a personal battle.

5 Felt Sorry For Him: When He Resigned From Pearson Spectre

In season 2 Daniel Hardman, one of the original, and generally hated, named partner’s returns to try and take control back of Pearson Spectre. Louis ends up taking Daniel’s side against Harvey and Jessica.

This is just one of the mistakes Louis makes in the show’s second season and when it all get’s too much he decides to resign from Pearson Spectre.

4 Hated Him: When He Treated Rachel Like Dirt

Another victim of Louis’ outrage when he learns who helped hide Mike’s secret is Rachel. Rachel has demonstrated numerous times that she is a great lawyer in her own right but Louis gives her a mountain of paralegal work as that is technically her job.

Rachel spends a lot of time on the show trying to prove herself as a lawyer only for Louis to knock her down in an instant.

3 Felt Sorry For Him: When He Had A Heart Attack

Louis Litt has always come across as the fierce, unforgiving, associate-busting lawyer that usually never admits defeat. But stress in the workplace can take a toll on anyone. From running the associates and other workplace stresses and long, rushed commutes to work, even it can be too much for someone like that to handle.

In season 3 episode 14, ‘Heartburn’, Louis suffers a heart attack in court, leaving the team shocked and worried, after which he has a newfound respect for the wellbeing of his friends.

2 Hated Him: When He Tried To Get Harvey Suspended

In season 5, just after Harvey throws Louis into a table, there is a partners meeting involving Jessica, Louis, Harvey, Jack Soloff and others. Just as Jessica is about to move on to other business, Louis brings up Harvey “viciously attacking” him in his office when it was in fact Louis that made the first move.

Jack Soloff surprises Harvey by quoting Louis’ by-laws and states that all the senior partners have to vote for Harvey’s dismissal so calls for a meeting for Friday to buy Harvey time.

1 Felt Sorry For Him: When He Made Mike A Cake

Viewers of the show will know that Louis has always lived and worked in Harvey’s shadow and all he wants is to be seen as his equal as they are both great lawyers. In season 3, episode 2 ‘I Want You To Want Me’, Louis gets so excited about Mike being his associate that he bakes him a cake that says “Welcome To Team Litt” on the top.

Louis’ excitement is short-lived when he sees Harvey and Mike put aside their differences and shake hands again. Louis realizes that he has lost something to Harvey once again and throws the cake in the bin.
