Super Bowl 2020 Movie & TV Trailers Prediction What Will Play During The Game

This year, Super Bowl LIV will offer film & TV fans a fresh look at some of 2020’s most anticipated projects, but which movies and TV shows will get new trailers during the big game?

The NFL’s Super Bowl is one of the biggest sporting events of the year – and this year will likely only pale in comparison to the 2020 Summer Olympics. Still, viewers tune in not just for the game itself, but for all the creative commercials and the Super Bowl halftime show, which is an event unto itself each year. Shakira and Jennifer Lopez are performing the halftime show, and the Super Bowl pregame will have entertainment from DJ Khaled and Demi Lovato. In addition to these performances and other commercials, the Super Bowl is a prime opportunity for studios and networks to debut new teasers for the year’s high-profile film and TV releases.

This year, Super Bowl LIV will see the Kansas City Chiefs face off against the San Francisco 49ers Sunday, Feb. 2 on Fox. With kickoff scheduled for 6:30 pm ET, viewers watching the big game can expect an exciting matchup, and even more exciting commercials and trailers during the show. Though we don’t know every movie and TV series expected to be previewed during the game, some will have been confirmed ahead of time. Now, we break down which movies and TV shows are expected to get new trailers or TV spots during the Super Bowl, and which will be sitting out the game. We’ll keep this article updated as news comes in about Super Bowl LIV trailers.

What Super Bowl 2020 Movie Trailers To Expect

Super Bowl 2020 Movie & TV Trailers Prediction What Will Play During The Game

Considering the massive viewership of the Super Bowl each year, it’s the perfect time for studios to preview their big upcoming releases – but not all studios take part. Disney, Paramount and Universal tend to take the most advantage of the Super Bowl while Sony sometimes sits it out and Warner Bros. hasn’t bought ad time in a few years. As such, don’t expect new trailers or TV spots for upcoming Warner Bros. movies like Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), Wonder Woman 1984 or Christopher Nolan’s Tenet.

In Sony’s case, if the studio purchases ad time during Super Bowl LIV, they’ll likely be promoting their latest comic book adaptation, Bloodshot. Based on the Valiant Comics character, Bloodshot opens mid March, so the final push will be just about to start when the Super Bowl kicks off. Plus, with Vin Diesel playing the lead character, the big game will be a chance for Sony to reach a large swath of the actor’s fans. As for Sony’s other big comic book movies, the first Morbius movie trailer only just released so it may be too soon for another look; it’s also a little early in the year for a Venom 2 teaser trailer, with that movie not expected to hit theaters until October.

For Disney, the most likely projects they’re going to preview at Super Bowl LIV are Pixar’s Onward and their live-action retelling of Mulan, both of which hit theaters in March. Disney tends to do a strong push at the Super Bowl, so since Onward and Mulan are their most immediate big releases, they’ll likely have most of the focus. That said, depending on how much ad time Disney buys, they have plenty of other big movies to potentially showcase during the game. After using Super Bowl LIII last year to preview both Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame, Disney may tease another Marvel Cinematic Universe film this year and if that’s the case, it’ll be Black Widow. Although Disney screened Eternals footage at CCXP in December, it’s a little too early for a full teaser trailer to be released. It’s also unlikely Disney will promote The New Mutants during the game, since ad time is extremely expensive and the movie is leftover from the Mouse House’s acquisition of Fox’s film studio.

Paramount has some big movies to promote as well, including the Sonic the Hedgehog film that’s out in mid-February, and A Quiet Place 2 out in late March. Though Paramount has released two Sonic the Hedgehog trailers already, one was before the Sonic redesign, so the studio may choose to release a new teaser or TV spot during the Super Bowl in order to market the movie to the football game’s massive audience. Additionally, after debuting the A Quiet Place 2 trailer on Jan. 1, enough time has passed for Paramount to release new footage. Considering the studio unveiled A Quiet Place Super Bowl trailer in 2018 ahead of that film’s release, it’s likely the studio will give the sequel a similar push.

Universal also usually has a big presence at the Super Bowl. Last year, the studio released the first trailer for the Fast & Furious spinoff movie Hobbs & Shaw around the Super Bowl. With the Fast & Furious 9 trailer release and live concert planned for two days before the Super Bowl, the studio will likely continue to promote that trailer at Super Bowl LIV on Sunday. Additionally, Universal may put its weight behind No Time To Die, Daniel Craig’s last outing as James Bond. With that film out in April, Universal could use a TV spot during the Super Bowl to preview the upcoming Bond film, perhaps using Billie Eilish’s title song.

UPDATE: THR has reported that Disney and Universal are the only studios to have purchased ad time during the Super Bowl, though Paramount is expected to have a presence during the pregame show. According to THR, Universal will promote Fast & Furious 9 and animated Illumination film Minions: The Rise of Gru, while Disney’s plans haven’t been made public. Meanwhile, Paramount will promote A Quiet Place: Part II, Sonic the Hedgehog and The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run. THR speculates Paramount may also highlight Top Gun: Maverick.

What Super Bowl 2020 TV Trailers To Expect

On the TV side, the major streaming services will likely use the Super Bowl to tease some of their biggest upcoming releases. This will be the first Super Bowl since the launch of Disney+ in November 2019 and it’s likely the Mouse House will take the opportunity to preview what the streaming service has planned for 2020. Instead of promoting any one release, though, Disney+ may release a trailer that includes new footage for many of their upcoming originals. Both Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision have started filming, though the latter might be too early on in production. Star Wars series The Mandalorian season 2 has also been filming, but again, there may not be any footage ready. Other originals that could be included are Star Wars: The Clone Wars season 7, the Lizzie McGuire revival, the Monsters Inc. spinoff Monsters at Work, as well as the films Stargirl and Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made.

As for other streamers, CBS All Access may secure ad time at the Super Bowl to promote Star Trek: Picard, their new series following Patrick Stewart’s character from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Last year, CBS’s streaming service previewed The Twilight Zone. Since Picard is their big title this winter, it’s likely that’s what the streamer may promote. What’s more difficult to discern is what Netflix will push at the Super Bowl, if anything. Their biggest upcoming release is, arguably, To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You, the sequel to 2018 hit To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. Given P.S. I Still Love You has a pre-Valentine’s Day release, the Super Bowl may be the perfect opportunity to promote the followup.

Hulu and Amazon have also typically promoted some of their bigger releases during the Super Bowl. Last year, Amazon debuted their original series Hanna immediately after the game, giving it a big push during the broadcast as well. If Amazon is looking to push one of its 2020 originals, it’s likely to be Hunters, the Nazi-hunting drama starring Al Pacino, Logan Lerman and more. As for Hulu, which released a trailer for The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 last year, their big upcoming releases are Devs, from Ex Machina director Alex Garland, and Little Fires Everywhere. Starring Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington, Little Fires Everywhere is an adaptation of Celeste Ng’s novel of the same name. Both shows are expected to premiere in March, making the Super Bowl a prime time to release new footage.

Premium cable networks may also have a presence at the Super Bowl, with HBO possibly unveiling the Westworld season 3 trailer and/or a teaser for Jordan Peele’s Lovecraft Country. Showtime may reveal new footage from their upcoming Penny Dreadful spinoff, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, and Starz may choose to promote Outlander season 5, which premieres mid-February. Last, since the Super Bowl is airing on Fox, there are also sure to be commercials for upcoming Fox shows.
