Supergirl Season 4 Best & Worst Episodes Ranked

While the third season of Supergirl took the Girl of Steel drama to a darker tone, season four carried it on to a degree. The big bad for the fourth season didn’t tackle a super-powered being as Kara (Melissa Benoist) had to face a force of evil that was simply human. Season four was heavy on addressing more social issues and play around with the concept of anti-alien agendas. Right from the start of the new season, viewers were made aware how different this season was going to be, compared to others. With the Children of Liberty serving as a major threat for most of the season, we still got a handful of new characters from the DC world.

From Jon Cryer joining the Arrowverse as Lex Luthor to Nicole Maines playing Nia Nal a.k.a. Dreamer, the first transgender superhero on TV, season four had a lot going for itself. Supergirl also took part in the Elseworlds crossover that became the final setup for this year’s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover. With that said, these are the best and worst episodes of Supergirl season four.

10 WORST: American Alien (Episode 1)

Supergirl Season 4 Best & Worst Episodes Ranked

Aside from the amazing introduction of Nia Nal, the season four premiere is a heavy one. This is where TPTB makes it clear from the get-go how topical the new season was going to. We see the hatred towards aliens in a very powerful way that can be unsettling for some. “American Alien” also introduces Mercy (Rhona Mitra) and Otis Graves (Robert Baker) as they’re on their quest to go after President Marsdin (Lynda Carter.) Their actions cause the President to be outed as an alien which is an extreme bummer because it became the end of Carter’s time on the series.

9 BEST: Elseworlds, Part 3 (Episode 9)

Supergirl Season 4 Best & Worst Episodes Ranked

The third chapter in the Elseworlds crossover takes place on Supergirl as the three-part event ends epically. John Deegan (Jeremy Davies) makes himself Superman on Earth-1 thanks to the Book of Destiny, putting our heroes in difficult positions.

From restoring reality back to normal to the heroes’ showdown with the evil Superman, “Elseworlds, Part 3” is one of the better episodes in Supergirl’s fourth season. This is the episode that properly announced that the 2019 crossover would be Crisis on Infinite Earths, sparking major buzz online.

8 WORST: Rather The Fallen Angel (Episode 7)

Supergirl Season 4 Best & Worst Episodes Ranked

The seventh episode is another frustrating chapter in the ongoing Children of Liberty saga. Manchester Black (David Ajala) ends up getting Kara trapped inside a monument site at Shelly Island by the Children of Liberty. James (Mehcad Brooks) has a mission to investigate the Children who almost manages to convince him to blow up the monument without knowing that Kara is inside. “Rather the Fallen Angel” is one of those episodes that really make the season suffer from the Children of Liberty story.

7 BEST: O Brother, Where Art Thou (Episode 15)

Supergirl Season 4 Best & Worst Episodes Ranked

After almost four years, the fifteenth episode of the season finally introduces Lena’s (Katie McGrath) famous villainous brother, Lex. “O Brother, Where Art Thou” really fleshes out the complicated relationship between the two Luthor siblings in a compelling way. Cryer’s performance as the legendary Superman foe steals the entire episode and then some.

In a very classic Lex way, he manages to accomplish a pretty villainous plan that involved fooling his sister. This is where fans got a chance to take a break from the anti-aliens storyline to enjoy the introduction of Lex.

6 WORST: Stand And Deliver (Episode 14)

Supergirl Season 4 Best & Worst Episodes Ranked

Ben Lockwood (Sam Witwer) and the Children of Liberty step things up a bit in the fourteenth episode. As Ben is gaining more followers and influence, he begins attempting to repeal the Alien Amnesty Act. This prompts Kara to lead a peaceful protest with aliens against the raging Children of Liberty. As powerful as it is, “Stand and Deliver” adds more fuel to the mixed bag that is season four.

5 BEST: The House Of L (Episode 16)

Supergirl Season 4 Best & Worst Episodes Ranked

“The House of L” takes the viewers on a big ride with Lex as the episode explores what he has been up to for the last three years. In the sixteenth episode, we see how Lex has been able to pull the strings so well this entire time. This is what really makes Cryer’s Lex truly live up the mastermind that he is in the comic books.

The episode also gives great exposition of how Eve Teschmacher (Andrea Brooks) got involved with Lex as she recently outed herself as a traitor to Lena. “The House of L” also properly addresses how Lex got connected with Red Daughter.

4 WORST: Suspicious Minds (Episode 10)

Supergirl Season 4 Best & Worst Episodes Ranked

Following the cliffhanger in the winter finale, the mid-season premiere escalates things even more for Kara. Refusing to reveal her true identity to President Baker, the Girl of Steel is no longer allowed to work with the D.E.O. But things get worse when Colonel Haley (April Parker Jones) keeps pursuing her quest in finding out Supergirl’s true identity. As Haley does, at one point, find out that Kara is Supergirl, the Colonel right away begins to blackmail our hero.

Even after J’onn (David Harewood) wipes her mind of Kara’s big secret, it doesn’t stop Haley from finding a new way to interrogate the entire D.E.O. in order to discover Supergirl’s secret. This is what leads to the controversy of “Suspicious Minds” when Alex (Chyler) makes J’onn wipe all of the D.E.O. agents’ memory of who Supergirl really is. But that includes Alex herself as it becomes one of the most heartbreaking moments in the entire series. It doesn’t change the fact that this storyline was extremely frustrating as it was another massive fuel for the drama in season four.

3 BEST: Red Dawn (Episode 21)

Supergirl Season 4 Best & Worst Episodes Ranked

One of the key stories in season four was Kara’s clone that was created as the result of Supergirl’s actions in the season three finale. Throughout the season, they kept building up Red Daughter before she was fully unleashed. The penultimate episode is where things begin coming full circle.

From Kara having to take on the corrupted president, Red Daughter “Red Dawn” is a solid hour as the fourth season was getting ready to end. But the biggest takeaway is that Alex finally regains her memories of Kara being Supergirl, putting an end to the frustrating storyline.

2 WORST: Man Of Steel (Episode 3)

Supergirl Season 4 Best & Worst Episodes Ranked

The third episode is where Ben’s transformation from a regular professor to the anti-alien foe Agent Liberty begins. Titled “Man of Steel”, not being related to Superman, fans follow how Ben’s loss of his father, who hated aliens, kicks off his evolution into becoming the big bad we know him as.

If you weren’t a fan of the topical theme through the anti-alien story, then “Man of Steel” doesn’t make it any easier to watch. While Witwer gives some pretty powerful performances, “Man of Steel” is an uncomfortable episode for the season. But it’s also a bit of an extreme of how fast Ben goes from being OK with aliens to suddenly have this big hatred toward them.

1 BEST: The Quest For Peace (Episode 22)

After a long fourth season, “The Quest for Peace” wraps up season four while also kicking several things into motion for season five. Kara gets to save the day not as the Girl of Steel but as journalist Kara Danvers, ending Baker’s run as president. Ben is also finally stopped as the Children of Liberty arc comes to an end. But the Luthor siblings have a massive moment when Lena shoots Lex who reveals in his dying moments that her best friend Kara is actually Supergirl.

While most of season four gets wrapped up here, LaMonica Garrett’s Monitor causes a bit of trouble for the upcoming season. Not only does he release J’onn’s brother Malific to Earth, but the finale also ends with the Monitor finding Lex’s dead body before doing something mysterious with it. In addition to that, fans get the major tease of what’s coming: Leviathan.
