Superman Actually Invented His Own Comic Creators

While he’s been written and drawn by many comic book creators, Superman was originally created by two young men from Cleveland – Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Both comic book creators imagined and reimagined Superman as many different beings – including a supervillain and a time traveler – before finally arriving at the Man of Steel most people are familiar with today.

In a heartwarming twist, Superman returned the favor in one classic comic book storyline by literally creating a world that didn’t have Superman – but did have Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. What happened next was both inspiring and strangely inevitable…

The story happened in All-Star Superman #10 and continued an epic storyline where Superman was exposed to a massive surge of solar energy that was slowly killing him. Forced to examine his own mortality, Superman wondered if Earth could rise up against its own self-destructive urges when he wasn’t around to protect them from the monsters and mad scientists of the world. Wanting to know the answer before he died, Superman did something extraordinary – he created a new world in the infant universe of Qwewq by applying a transfusion of pure solar energy that gave rise to “Earth Q.”

Observing Earth Q from a cube in his Fortress of Solitude, Superman watched as civilizations rose and fell, and the humans of the world advanced from primitive societies into more advanced societies. Readers actually see Earth Q, much like our Earth, has Aborigines, Indian communities, and went through its own Renaissance (all at a much faster rate relative to Superman’s Earth). However, the planet does not have superhuman beings and was intentionally created to discover what humanity would do without a Superman to protect them.

So, what happened? Well, by noon that day (or millions of years into Earth Q’s development), a young comic book creator mused “third time lucky” and began drawing a sketch – of the Golden Age Superman. While it could only be suggested, the implication was clear – in creating a world without Superman, the Man of Steel created our world (or one very much like ours) where a young Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster helped create their world’s Superman.

Metafictional moments are nothing new in comic books, with characters like Deadpool making self-referential jokes about their own fictional status. By building a world that would eventually create him as a fictional being, however, Superman intertwined the very nature of his existence with our own. Siegel and Shuster may have created one of the most inspiring superheroes of their generation, but now fans know that some of that inspiration may have come from the Man of Steel himself.
