Superman Shares an Essential Gadget with the Guardians of the Galaxy

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Superman #30!

DC’s universe is vast, and few alien species speak English, which means Superman has to take a page out of the Guardians of the Galaxy’s playbook and use an interpreter chip in order to communicate. The Man of Steel and his son Jonathan just journeyed to planet Thakkram to follow up on a cryptic message from an old friend, aware they’ll be trying to communicate with a society whose words can contain multiple interpretations or meanings. Unfortunately, Superman’s gadget doesn’t stop him from making a dangerous error, showing that while space-faring heroes may need interpreter chips to communicate, they still have to be careful about the results.

In Superman #30 by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Scott Godlewski, Superman’s perfect day playing mini-golf with his family is interrupted by a distress call from planet Thakkram, specifically a call from his old friend Qarath O Dannim. Superman and his son travel to the planet, where after a less than friendly welcome, they are greeted by Thakkram scientist and ally Faldr Pornym. Pornym informs them that Qarath is dead, and having received a message from him is impossible. Long ago, a parasite attached to an alien corpse fell to Thakkram, and this “Shadowbreed” threatened to consume the heat and light of the planet. Faldr, Qarath, and Superman were able to repel the entity to a nearby canyon where a radiation bomb supposedly eradicated it, ensuring Qarath’s place as the new ruler of Thakkram and the story as the stuff of legends.

As they descend upon Thakkram, Superman tells his son to put in his interpreter chip but warns him that the planet’s language is still tricky, since words cover a wider range of meanings than he might expect. As Superman and Jon learn about what has happened since his last time on Thakkram, his friend’s tragic death and the loss of Superman’s communicator years ago do not diminish either hero’s suspicions. Instead of returning home, they travel to the canyon where the Shadowbreed’s original host body dwells, where they discover that the language barrier has brought them here on a misunderstanding: their old enemy was not dead, and it has returned to finish the job it started long ago.

In the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the team’s profiles while they are being processed for incarceration reveal that members like Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, have translator chips embedded inside their body – a standard measure for space-faring individuals – allowing them to communicate across the galaxy. This technology makes sense considering how frequently this group of misfits, criminals, and heroes come into contact with different alien species and also explains how all languages sound the same despite being from different planets altogether.

While Superman is a recognized symbol of order and justice throughout much of the galaxy, he and other Earth heroes still require technology like translator chips to speak to other civilizations when necessary, but it’s a fun sci-fi detail that there would be limits to the technology. The issue here is that the Thakkramites’ language is so different that while Kal-El’s chip can interpret, it does not always have the context for precise meaning. Despite having the Guardians-like gadget, Superman visits Thakkram knowing he and his son need to be careful how and what they say – they’re just not cautious enough about what they hear.

Whether it was a failure on Superman’s part or the technology in his ear, the father-son duo discovers that Qarth’s message was actually a warning, and the Shadowbreed has infected Faldr. Considering the villain thinks its Kryptonian enemies have left the planet, Superman and his son have the element of surprise, but the foreshadowing at the beginning of the issue does not bode well for their efforts. Thankfully, just like the Guardians of the Galaxy, facing certain death while fighting impossible odds is just another day in the life.
