Supernatural The 10 Scariest Scenes From Season 4 Ranked
Supernatural: The 10 Scariest Scenes From Season 4, Ranked
Supernatural is known for its horror, but it’s fourth season upped the ante with these terrifying scenes that left audiences behind their couches.

By Season 4, we knew to expect the unexpected on Supernatural. It’s not surprising that each season over the years has packed its fair share of “pee-your-pants hysteria”, as Jo (Alona Tal) would say. It’s part of why we love Supernatural: it satisfies horror fans everywhere. The brother bond between Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padalecki) is a bonus.
While each season boasts scary moments of all kinds, we’re taking the liberty of looking at Season 4, specifically. We were introduced to Castiel (Misha Collins) and Sam’s demon blood problem, among other things, so there were plenty of scary moments.
10 The Rugaru
In “Metamorphosis”, Sam and Dean join a fellow hunter to help with a case in which a man is gradually transforming into a Rugaru. It’s scary because it’s purely disgusting to watch. Not to mention Sam ends up burning the guy alive to kill him, making for possibly the scariest scene of the episode. Not a good way to die. Though, we have to feel sorry for the Rugaru a bit, given he didn’t understand what was happening to him and gave into his natural instincts, though he controlled himself enough to save his wife before he perished.
9 Finding Adam’s Corpse
Finding out they had a half-brother they never knew about is shocking enough. Finding out the Adam they know isn’t really Adam is a bit over-the-top, but that’s a day in the life of the Winchesters.
While trapped in a crypt, Dean finds Adam’s corpse, realizing that the Adam with Sam is the ghoul that killed and ate Adam to take on his form, as the ghoul and his sister wanted revenge given John had killed their parents years before and decided to use John’s sons to exact their vengeance. We can only imagine how Dean must’ve felt in that scary moment, and how the two felt afterward when they gave the real Adam a hunter’s funeral, having never known their brother.
8 Dean’s Lilith Hallucination
In Dean’s final moments of fighting off the ghost sickness in “Yellow Fever”, Lilith in the form of a sweet-looking yet terrifyingly creepy little girl appears and taunts Dean, particularly regarding his time in Hell. She reminds him that he remembers everything, and mimics his heart beating, which nearly leads to Dean’s death until Sam and Bobby (Jim Beaver) manage to scare the ghost causing the sickness to death, thus saving Dean but leaving him with bad memories and a heck of a scare.
7 The Panic Room
When Bobby built the Panic Room, we’re sure he never intended to lock Sam inside to detox from the effects the demon blood was taking on him. Watching Sam freak out in the panic room was as almost as hard on audiences as it was on Dean.
Sam was screaming and begging and pleading for Dean, and Dean has to ignore him and let Sam ride things out alone. That’s one of the hardest things Dean’s ever done, and Sam was far from recovered as of “When the Levee Breaks.”
6 Dean With An Axe
A siren is nearly Sam’s and Dean’s downfall in “Sex and Violence.” The siren manages to trick them and place them against one another, leading to Dean nearly killing Sam with an axe until Bobby bursts in and intervenes, killing the siren. If not for Bobby, Dean might have really killed his brother.
Not to mention the things they said to one another while the siren was controlling them leaves behind residual effects and feelings of bitterness. The foundation of Supernatural centers on Sam’s and Dean’s bond as brothers, and seeing this fall apart the way it did and go as far as it did was scary to watch.
5 Pamela’s Blindness
Everything starts off flirty and fun for Pamela (Traci Dinwiddie), a psychic Bobby takes Dean and Sam to see when they’re trying to find out what pulled Dean out of Hell. Unfortunately for Pamela, she disregards Castiel’s warnings after learning his name to back off, resulting in her seeing him, which blinds her permanently.
Watching it happen is horrifying, as in a matter of moments the tone of the scene changed and resulted in a permanent repercussion.
4 Sam’s Addiction
Sam was drinking demon blood all throughout the fourth season to amplify his powers. However, he’s finally caught in “The Rapture” when Dean and Castiel catch him drinking blood from a demon. While Sam intends to use his powers to exorcise a demon from an innocent woman, Dean and Castiel are horrified–understandably so. Watching Sam drink demon blood and use his powers is Dean’s worst nightmare, and watching it unfold had to be awful for him to witness.
3 Waking Up In A Coffin
Isn’t this everyone’s worst nightmare? Waking inside a coffin, trapped, no way of knowing if you can get out or not? Dean turns on his lighter, so we can see and feel the same sense of confinement and accompanying fear he does. Yet, Dean being Dean still manages to break out of the box, despite the dirt falling on top of him as his hands burst through the ground and he crawls out of the box.
Dean may have escaped death, but he just lived one of humanity’s worst nightmares, and we definitely still get a little freaked out every time we watch this scene.
2 The Feral Children
In “Family Remains”, Sam and Dean head to Nebraska to investigate the haunting of a house. However, their investigation is interrupted when a family moves into the house, and they discover it isn’t a spirit they’re dealing with: it’s two humans. Worse yet, these two young children are feral and terrifying due to years of abuse. They are determined to protect their home but end up dead in the name of self-defense on the part of the Winchesters and the family in the house. It’s scary because it could really happen, and it’s tragic. When a case has the humans as the bad guy, those tend to be the scariest of cases on Supernatural.
1 Breaking The Final Seal
Watching Sam kill Lilith was painful. He thinks he’s doing the right thing, but we already know from Dean that it’ll break the final seal, which is beyond bad news. Even worse, Ruby prevented Dean from telling Sam in time to prevent such a catastrophe, and Sam was tortured by Lucifer for years on end because of it. Breaking one seal leads to a lifetime of torture and haunting for Sam, so he’s definitely paid his dues for making such a massive mistake.
