Youngchan Hwang and Carnby Kim’s horror webtoon series Sweet Home has concluded, and many fans were satisfied with the story’s conclusion. Sweet Home features a well-rounded human cast who must fend off many monsters while trying to escape their apartment complex.
As with Junji Ito’s horrific character designs to Hajime Isayama’s creepy looking titans from Attack On Titan, Carnby made sure to make the monster designs in Sweet Home look as frightening, menacing as possible. Therefore, it’s worth highlighting the ten creepiest monsters that the webtoon had to offer the fans. Here are the 10 creepiest-looking monsters in the manhwa, ranked.
10 Starving Monster
Having a grotesque appearance similar to most designs seen in some of the best zombie anime, the Starving Monster is the first monster the main protagonist Hyun Cha encounters in Sweet Home. Before becoming a monster, this woman was a resident at the same complex Hyun lived in and had a stressful job. The woman underwent extreme starvation, and this diet affected the type of monster she’d becomeーa hungry, flesh-loving zombie.
Witnessing the woman beg Hyun for food as she underwent her zombie-like transformation was heartbreaking to see.
9 Steroid Monster
Taking on a similar appearance to the Hulk and many of his most powerful villains, the Steroid Monster wasn’t a creature one would want to encounter. The Steroid Monster possesses immense strength, durability, and just the sheer stomping of his foot could send chills down anyone’s spine. However, like some of the mindless titans seen in Attack on Titan, the Steroid Monster does assault other monsters if they provoke it.
It took Hyun and his allies several battles to put an end to this monster’s tirade, and rest assured, it did not gain any protein to recover from the beating it received.
8 Tongue Monster
Looking like a mix between Left 4 Dead’s Smoker zombie and Slender Man, the tongue monster is a monster worth avoiding. Like a mosquito, this monster uses its absurdly long tongue to suck the life force out of its victimsーleaving them in a shriveled state. Even if a person were to hide behind a wall, this monster’s tongue can break-through concrete with ease.
Although this monster was a threat to the humans in the apartments, Hyun intelligently uses the tongue monster’s tongue to stop an opposing monsterーwhich ironically foreshadows the tongue monster’s demise.
7 Speed Monster
Arguably the quickest monster in the webtoon, the Speed Monster’s cyclops-like appearanceーalong with its sadistic nature, makes it a creepy threat by far. Having been a track-and-field competitor during its human life, the Speed Monster is quick, crude, and immoral as it’s shown to have killed its human roommate over mere jealously. Although the Speed Monster isn’t faster than light like some anime characters, it makes up for it by having a menacing prescience.
Regardless of the monster’s speed limitations, it provided a tough challenge for Hyun to take down. However, thanks to its over-confident personality, Hyun manages to use the monster’s power against it.
6 Slime Monster
The Slime Monster’s appearance highlights its creepiness well. Taking a slimy, gelatinous form with two floating eyes, the Slime Monster engulfs its victims with its slime to suffocate them. Although it’s capable of harming others, this monster’s known for being the most cowardly of them allーwhich adds another layer to its creepiness, tragic backstory, and later demise.
This monster used to be a little boyーwho witnessed a monster murder his mother in front of himーcausing him to undergo severe trauma and fear about being found by it. Though Hyun convinces the monster not to harm anybody, his actions become futile after an evil group ends the monster’s life.
5 Blind Monster
Having had a good chunk of its head removed from one of Hyun’s comrades, the Blind Monster’s Demogorgon-like physique is a sight for sore eyes. Although it can’t see, the Blind Monster’s cruel personality, enhanced hearing, and ability to shoot rocks to impale its victims makes it a monster to fear on the battlefield.
Not only is the monster’s scrawny appearance horrific, but its actions also led a small child to become traumatizedーwhich resulted in the child becoming the liquid, cowardly monster. After several fights with the humans and other creatures, the Blind Monster met its demise by one of Hyun’s allies’ hands.
4 Bat Monster
With an appearance that resembles some of the most horrifying enemies Guts faced in Berserk, the Bat Monster’s scavenger-like personalityーalong with its sharp teeth, menacing eyes, and muscular body, is frightening. The monster’s ability to fly is also creepy as it could hoist an adult man or woman away one night like an eagle capturing a wandering rodent.
Even after several beatdowns from Hyun’s comrades, the monster manages to recover and continue its rampage. Although the Bat Monster is a scavenger at-best, it does refuse to eat victims who are under-going the monster transformation process. It is unknown whether the monster had died or recovered from its final fight with Hyun’s equivalent monster-human hybrid, Ihyun Jo.
3 Eyeball Monster
The Eyeball Monster is known for being a peeping-tom creature at bestーwhich is apparent during the panel where it stares directly at Hyun behind a window. This monster has an exaggerated head-size filled with large, penetrating eyes and can extend its neck to a long distance. Although this creature doesn’t have the same man-eating, horrid personality as the others, it will attack someone if provoked by revealing its hidden fangs.
Even when a character cut-off the monster’s head, the Eyeball Monster regenerated, but instead of an enlarged head, it had a neck covered with miniature eyeballs.
2 Infant Monster
The Infant Monster may be the most harmless-looking monster from the series, but it’s chilling, heartbreaking backstory adds another layer to its creepiness. Before becoming this baby-looking monster, an older woman named Myeong-Ja Limーwho lost her child in a sad accident. When battling it out with the cannibalistic monster inside of her, she underwent immense pain that was tough for Hyun and his friends to watch.
Although she successfully prevents the monster from turning her into a cold-hearted predator, she did regret the fact that she couldn’t help Hyun and his friends escape from the apartments. Thus, Myeong-Ja became a cocoon and was reborn as an enlarged baby creature.
1 Face Monster
A creature that would give the freakiest monsters from Horror Manga the chills is the Face Monster. This monster is tallーwith a deformed head shape and has a large face on its body. It’s a monster that will only attack if ignored or provoked and consistently want its victims’ positive feedback about its appearance. This monster’s form reflects its human past-life as Jay Ryu, a fellow apartment survivorーwho adored looking at himself and dreamed of becoming a superstar.
Thankfully, it’s horrid appearance didn’t coincide with its fighting prowess as Hyun manages to put an end to this monster’s need for attention and praise.
