Switch Pro Rumors Shot Down By Nintendo Of America Boss Doug Bowser

Doug Bowser, the president of Nintendo of America, shot down rumors of a potential Nintendo Switch Pro in a recent interview. Although the Switch has had a comparably slow year, there have been a handful of first-party titles that released earlier in 2020, such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Paper Mario: The Origami King, and Pikmin 3: Deluxe. More recently, the massively popular online multiplayer game Among Us was announced and released for the platform. It didn’t take long for Among Us to become a bestseller on the eShop, either.

Even though the Switch has had a slower year in terms of first-party support, that didn’t stop consumers from purchasing the system last month. The Switch even outsold the highly coveted PlayStation 5 during the PS5’s launch month. There are more NES and SNES titles headed to Nintendo Switch Online, as well, including Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble!, thus completing the Donkey Kong Country trilogy on the Switch’s online service.

In a recent Polygon interview with Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s president dismissed speculation of a Nintendo Switch Pro. When asked whether Nintendo was considering making the rumored Switch Pro, Bowser responded by saying that the company is devoting its efforts to the standard and Lite versions of the console as of now. As the president said himself, “the momentum on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite in the fourth year is strong.” Because of those console’s successes, Bowser doesn’t see a need to make a Switch Pro when the standard and Lite counterparts are selling incredibly well.

Although it may be disappointing to some fans that a Switch Pro isn’t on the horizon, it does make sense that Nintendo didn’t have something like this in the works. Nintendo has never truly been a hardware-forward, technologically impressive company. It’s focused more so on making fun games than showing off technological and graphical prowess. After all, there was no such thing as a Wii U Pro or even a Wii U Lite, for that matter.

Because Nintendo is also perceived as more of a family-friendly company, it’s logical that it’s dedicating itself fully to the standard and Lite versions. The Nintendo Switch Lite, in particular, is targeted toward children and younger audiences. Many of their franchises, such as Mario and Pokémon, are geared toward children, as well. A Switch Pro, from that perspective, likely wouldn’t sell nearly as well as the Lite. A Switch Pro would be an exciting prospect, but the Nintendo Switch is still a solid console that can hold its own.
