Taylor Swift is a certified musical legend, with Grammy-winning albums like 1989 and Fearless to her credit, and more recently the highly acclaimed Folklore, which has made its way to the top of many year-end lists (and also received Grammy nominations). Since the songstress made her blazing debut into the world of music, she has also dabbled in television and film.

9 Cats (2019) – 2.8

Taylor Swift’s most recent movie was Cats, directed by Tom Hooper, of King’s Speech and The Danish Girl fame. Easily the most absurd movie released into the world in a while, the movie was based on the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical which details the lives of the Jellicle cats and their race to ascension into the Heaviside Layer.

Swift makes a short appearance as Bombalurina, the cabaret-dancing companion to Idris Elba’s Macavity. She mostly sang and danced for the length of a song, before departing for the rest of the movie. Cats achieved cult status as a “so bad its good” watch, but Swift a Grammy nomination for “Beautiful Ghosts”, the track she wrote for the movie.

8 Hannah Montana: The Movie (2009) – 4.5

Yet again, Swift made a wholly musical appearance in the teenybopper flick, which starred Miley Cyrus, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Lucas Till. The movie was an extension of the popular Disney show Hannah Montana, where the titular teenager visits her hometown of Crowley Corners in Tennessee and rediscovers her true country roots.

Taylor Swift makes an appearance as herself during a barn party where she performs the song “Crazier,” which she wrote for the movie, for the dancing Tennessee crowd. The song video has a much higher rating on IMDb (7.2) but the movie itself got a lower one.

7 Valentine’s Day (2010) – 5.7

This star-studded movie featured Swift in a full-fledged acting role as Felicity, a shallow but sweet high school teenager who is very much in love with her boyfriend Willy, played by Taylor Lautner of Twilight fame. The two cheer, play sports, attend classes, and plan to have sex on Valentine’s Day.

Swift plays Felicity well with all the excitement and pluckiness that the role required, and Swifties were on the lookout for whenever she would make an appearance in the ensemble movie. The track “Today Was A Fairytale” was written and performed by Swift for the movie.

6 The Lorax (2012) – 6.4

It only makes sense that a singer would play a voice role at some point in their career, and Taylor Swift lent her voice to The Lorax, based on the Dr. Seuss book of the same name. Swift plays Audrey, an environmentalist who lives in Thneedville, a world without real trees. All Audrey wants to do is see a real tree in her lifetime.

The environmentally conscious movie was liked for its message and Swift’s voice delivered beautifully as young Audrey.

5 The Giver (2014) – 6.5

A YA movie based on the eponymous novel by Lois Lowry, The Giver had a surprise cameo by Taylor Swift in a short but important role. Set in a dystopian future where all emotions have been removed from the world, and people are assigned their jobs for the rest of their lives, the movie follows a young boy who is assigned as the Receiver of Memory, which means he receives memories of a bygone world with joy, pain, love, and sorrow from the Giver.

Swift plays dark-haired Rosemary, the daughter of the Giver, who was first assigned the role of the Receiver of Memory but could not handle the weight of all the emotions that she had seen, thus asking for death instead.

4 Saturday Night Live (2009) – 7.3

Taylor Swift has appeared in numerous SNL episodes, often as a musical guest. She hosted once and acted in skits in two episodes, both in 2009 and both with the same rating. She played numerous different parts, which included Shakira in “Bunny Business,” Bella in “Firelight,” and an embarrassed teenager in “Driving PSA.”

The singer’s comedic timing was surprisingly spot-on and her ability to not take herself seriously makes her SNL performances hilarious.

3 Miss Americana (2020) – 7.4

While Miss Americana is a documentary about the epic highs and lows of Swift’s own sustained stardom, it would be remiss to not include the opening film of Sundance 2020.

Directed by Lana Wilson, with footage from Swift’s childhood to the present day, the film gives a nuanced take on her growing political voice, her struggles with body image, and the incredible loneliness that comes with being at the top of the game. Swift’s song from the documentary “Only the Young” became an anthem during the US Elections.

2 CSI Crime Scene Investigation: Turn, Turn, Turn (2009) – 8.7

It is worth noting that this was Taylor Swift’s first acting performance. She appeared as Haley Jones, the 16-year-old daughter of a dodgy motel manager, who turns up dead in the parking lot of the same motel. The singer alternates with her natural blonde locks as well as brown hair for the role.

The episode shows a flashback of Haley before her murder, and Taylor Swift aces the role. In true Swift-style, she also wrote and performed music for the episode.

1 New Girl: Elaine’s Big Day (2013) – 8.7

Taylor Swift made her most-loved acting appearance in the season finale of the wildly popular New Girl alongside Zooey Deschanel and Hannah Simone. The episode depicted Cece’s almost marriage to Shivrang, which she then called off, much to the delight of her groom. Shivrang also secretly didn’t want to marry Cece because he was in love with Elaine, played by Taylor Swift, who had crashed the wedding!

Everybody has a happy ending, especially Swift’s Elaine, which she played with adorable flair.
