That 70s Show Unexpectedly Removed From Netflix

That ’70s Show has been removed from Netflix as of Monday morning, triggering a reasoned outrage from fans on social media. Set in the late 1970s’, the 1998 Fox period sitcom followed the lives of a group of teenage friends in a fictional Wisconsin suburb. Leading the group was Topher Grace’s Eric Forman, a typical high-school student who lived under the authority of his parents. The show’s other cast members included Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher, Danny Masterson, Laura Prepon, Wilmer Valderrama, and Lisa Robin Kelly. Through its eight seasons, That ’70s Show depicted the joys and sorrows of teenagers in the days of Led Zeppelin 8-tracks, while satirizing the attitudes, events, and fads of that era.

That ’70s Show has been streaming on Netflix across its many regions since 2015. In 2019, the series production company Carsey-Werner put out a press release stating the show was due a contract renewal at Netflix next year. Representatives from Carsey-Werner also expressed interest in renewing their deal with Netflix, and the streamer itself contemplated the continuation of its contract, mostly because of a renewed interest in the show. According to an unconfirmed Nielsen report, That ‘70s Show’s viewership was up by a whopping 57% during the pandemic, giving Netflix all the reasons to renew the deal. But unfortunately, the contract did not materialize, and the streamer has now lost another iconic sitcom.

What’s On Netflix reports That 70’s Show has been removed from Netflix’s content library. The sitcom’s departure wasn’t cataloged in the official list of movies and TV shows leaving Netflix in September 2020, which makes the sudden removal even more devastating. Netflix held global rights to all eight seasons of That ’70s Show, which are now unavailable in all the streaming regions, including the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. Netflix is currently mum about the sudden removal of That 70’s Show from its service, although the show’s fans are erupting in rage on social media.

2020 hasn’t been kind to Netflix’s sitcom library, starting with Friends leaving in January. The Office and Parks and Recreations are also on their way out to join Friends on NBC’s Peacock streaming service. Netflix is now attempting to plug the holes by adding other reputable sitcoms. The streaming giant recently acquired the streaming rights to Community. And its also tipped to bring in Seinfield next year. Netflix has also experimented by launching prestigious sitcoms of its own, like Space Force, but they lack the charisma of the classic multi-cams. That ‘70s Show was inarguably a valuable entity on Netflix, and now the streamer will have to compensate its furious with another popular sitcom.

As it’s clear from the absence of That ’70’s Show in the ‘What’s-Leaving-Netflix’ list, the series departure from the streaming giant is not yet official. The sitcom may arrive back on Netflix if the premium VOD service reaches an agreement with the Carsey-Werner. Otherwise, the show will be merchandised to the next highest bidder. That ’70s Show completed its original run on Fox, whose TV assets have since been acquired by Disney. It is, therefore, likely for the show to end up on Disney+, which was essentially the overriding cause behind the multi-billion dollar deal.
