The popularity of The Vampire Diaries can’t be understated. Though not a ratings juggernaut, the audience was fiercely loyal and still are to this day, which is why it has produced two successful spin-offs in The Originals and Legacies, allowing the franchise to live on several years after the first series ended.

That inaugural spin-off, The Originals, was arguably even better than The Vampire Diaries, scoring more consistently impressive ratings on IMDb. In fact, the series itself holds an 8.2 rating, which is superior to TVD’s 7.7. The show was at its best during these incredible episodes filled with everything that made the franchise great.

10 Farewell To Storyville (Season 1, Episode 16) – 9.2

The relationship between the Mikaelson siblings was always a contentious one despite their undying loyalty. The truth came out that Rebekah had lured Mikael to New Orleans to scare off Klaus decades earlier, putting the two at greater odds than ever before. That set the tone for “Farewell to Storyville.”

Klaus and Rekebah were trapped by a spell in a cemetery and Klaus had the white oak stake, which could kill Rebekah for good. Elijah was in there with them, trying to prevent his sister’s death. That made this an intense episode and one filled with family drama, which was typically where The Originals shined.

9 Fire With Fire (Season 2, Episode 21) – 9.3

One thing that every show in The Vampire Diaries universe has done well is wrap up their seasons. They always deliver some of the biggest and most interesting storylines within the last few installments and that was the case again as season 2 came to an end.

There were a lot of threads going on in “Fire With Fire,” which was centered around Klaus seeking revenge on his siblings for once again betraying his trust. The villainous Dahlia also played a major part as Freya teamed with Elijah and Rebekah to take her down, all while Davina looked into potentially bringing Kol back into the mix.

8 Ashes To Ashes (Season 2, Episode 22) – 9.3

Of course, it makes sense to follow up a tremendous penultimate episode with a great season finale. Season 2 of The Originals concluded with “Ashes to Ashes,” which saw the main three siblings reunite (with Rebekah back in her body for the first time in a while) to fight against Dahlia.

It marked a welcome ending to a tumultuous season that saw so many pivotal characters returning from the dead. The highlight of the finale might have actually been the actions of Cami, Vincent, and Josh, who stepped up in a big way. Ending the season with Klaus reading a bedtime story to Hope was also perfect.

7 Savior (Season 3, Episode 9) – 9.3

It could be argued that, as the show progressed, Freya was actually the most valuable Mikaelson. Her impressive powers as a witch led her to get most of her siblings out of trouble in plenty of huge situations. That was the case again in “Savior” as she looked to reverse a deadly curse.

The inclusion of Lucien as a villain made season 3 one of the show’s best and his influence was all over this episode. Add in the Christmas element and this was a memorable installment but it all came to a crushing end as after Klaus confessed feelings for Cami, she was killed.

6 No More Heartbreaks (Season 3, Episode 19) – 9.3

Once again, the series really picked things up as a season was getting near its conclusion. In the previous episode, Lucien bit Cami and she didn’t have much time left, so Klaus spent the majority of “No More Heartbreaks” at her side. Hayley, Elijah, Marcel, and others also raced to try and save her.

What made this episode so great was that all of these efforts proved to be futile. That made it incredibly sad as Cami couldn’t be saved and Klaus had to say goodbye to someone who always believed in his redemption, almost as much as Elijah did.

5 The Battle Of New Orleans (Season 1, Episode 21) – 9.4

All of season 1 built towards a war between Marcel and Klaus, with some huge fights sprinkled in throughout. “The Battle of New Orleans,” the penultimate installment of the season, saw Marcel make a major move towards ending Klaus.

Meanwhile, Mikael was attempting to come back into the fold as the ultimate villain with the assistance of the powerful Davina. The real kicker came at the end when Hayley went into labor, Klaus was weakened, and the witches had devious plans for what to do with the baby.

4 A Streetcar Named Desire (Season 3, Episode 14) – 9.4

Having a show take place in a shared universe is always a cool thing for crossover episodes. This is when two or more shows intertwine with storylines or characters and is famous in this series of shows as well as in the Arrowverse or Dick Wolf’s Chicago programs.

“A Streetcar Named Desire” saw The Vampire Diaries come to The Originals as Stefan Salvatore showed up in New Orleans and actually helped in saving Klaus and Elijah, which fans loved to see. This also marked the end of Aurora’s arc as Klaus buried her alive.

3 The Feast Of All Sinners (Season 4, Episode 13) – 9.4

The final two seasons were shorter than the first three, so episode 13 of season 4 was actually the finale. This was a highly emotional time for the series as audiences got to see Klaus and Hayley be parents to a growing Hope.

Unfortunately, this was ruined by the debut of The Hollow, the show’s most ruthless villain as it was infecting Hope. The Mikaelsons used a spell to each take a bit of The Hollow to save Hope but it caused them to have to split apart, threatening the “always and forever” mantra.

2 From A Cradle To A Grave (Season 1, Episode 22) – 9.6

As noted, the end of season 1 featured the witches preparing to take Klaus and Hayley’s newborn child. “From a Cradle to a Grave,” the season 1 finale, saw Hayley give birth and immediately have the baby taken just before she was killed.

That changed the course of the show because Hayley had her baby’s blood in her system, so she came back to life as a hybrid. Fans were excited to see Hayley, Elijah, and Klaus go to war with the witches to save Hope. The Mikaelsons sent Hope to live with Rebekah and the last moments teased the return of Esther.

1 The Bloody Crown (Season 3, Episode 22) – 9.6

It was finally time for all of Klaus’s misdeeds over the centuries to come back and bite him. With super-vamp powers, Marcel was able to put Klaus on trial for his actions and he not only admitted them but continued to talk about them with glee.

That was dramatic on its own but things were even more intriguing when it became clear that he was biding time and making the ultimate sacrifice. Instead of being killed, he was daggered and paralyzed so he could live while his family fell unconscious, bound to his life until Hayley could find a cure for their various issues.
