With the recent release of Call of Duty: Vanguard, series fans have seen a favorite alternate mode make a reappearance: Zombies. As its name would suggest, this game mode sees players pitted against merciless hordes of the undead.

However, defeating these zombies will take equal parts of strategy and skill. As a cooperative experience focused on fighting AI-controlled enemies, Zombies is heavily unlike the base experience of Call of Duty: Vanguard. However, there are tips to keep in mind to make fighting zombies a little easier.

Understand Your Objectives

When a game starts, players will have three types of objectives available to them, accessed through different portals, and taking place on four different maps.

Blitz sees players defend against waves of zombies, while Harvest has players add runestones from defeated zombies to an obelisk three times. Finally, Transmit forces players to follow a floating head throughout the map to avoid taking damage. While it might seem simplistic, knowing how best to approach these different modes is vastly important.

Artifacts Provide A Power Boost

Each operative in Zombies can bind themselves to ‘dark aether’ entities, which grant powerful abilities through the use of artifacts.

There are currently four of these abilities to choose from, ranging from slowing enemies in an area of effect to a massive explosion, and from a temporary stealth to providing a damage boost to your team. These abilities have to charge to become usable, but can provide a powerful boost in the thick of a chaotic fight.

Don’t Horde Sacrificial Hearts

Sacrificial hearts are related to Call of Duty: Vanguard’s new covenant system, which mimics the replayable loops of ‘roguelike’ games. Sacrificial hearts act as a form of currency and can be turned in for covenants.

While this system is not particularly in-depth, it can easily create interesting synergies with a player’s loadout, as each player can have three of these items active at once. Interestingly, Covenant Alters glow corresponding to the rarity of covenants, so players can know when epic and legendary items are available.

Looting Is In Your Best Interest

Between objectives, it is possible to find crystals or loot chests near small groups of zombies. Locating these drops on the mini-map and looting them is a surefire way for players to steadily grow stronger.

Chests and crystals can drop salvage, equipment, and more, and can provide a plethora of items to use, especially if a team gets caught in a bad spot later on in a game. Always be on the lookout for these prizes.

To Farm Or Not To Farm?

While Zombies is obviously a game mode about culling waves of undead, objective completion is also of vital importance. Completing objectives earns large amounts of experience and currency, but it also causes the zombies players face to become more dangerous over time.

On the other hand, it is possible to earn large amounts of resources by clearing out all zombies before starting a new objective. Striking a balance between these two styles of play is important, to both level up and to become steadily stronger during a specific zombies match.

Armor Is A Player’s Best Friend

It might be in a player’s best interest to try and acquire armor as soon as possible. Available for 750 Salvage when created at a crafting table, or dropped as an item, level 1 armor provides a number of powerful utilities to a player who uses it.

Armor provides a substantial boost to defense, which already makes it incredibly useful. However, it also allows for the use of armor shards, which can be dropped by enemies, and allows for players with armor to take power-up, Max Armor.

Don’t Forsake Other Modes

In Call of Duty: Vanguard, the levels of guns can transfer between game modes. As leveled guns can boost a bevy of powerful benefits, players can level up a gun in multiplayer for use in zombies mode, and vice versa.

Not only does this allow for further experimentation with Call of Duty: Vanguard’s various powerful weapons, but if a player is feeling tired of a particular mode, a refresher in another format might prove helpful.

Sometimes, The Clichés Are Right

If someone is familiar with any media revolving around zombies, chances are they’re aware of several tactics to fight the undead. Not only are shotguns a ubiquitous offensive powerhouse, but headshots are a premier way to take down a zombie.

Both of these hold true in Call of Duty: Vanguard. Shotguns have incredibly high base damage, allowing for players aiming for a more close-range playstyle to be incredibly powerful. Of course, aiming for critical damage with any weapon through headshots is incredibly powerful as well. Being swarmed by enemies in cramped areas is a death sentence, so dealing with zombies as quickly as possible is required.

Take Note Of More Dangerous Zombie Variants

After every finished objective, the fight against the zombies will grow steadily more difficult. Zombies will appear in greater numbers and will become harder to eliminate. However, at certain milestones, new types of zombies will begin to appear.

During the third round, explosive ‘Boom Schreiers’ will rush towards players and attempt to detonate themselves. Meanwhile, during the fifth round, the tanky ‘Sturmkrieger’ will deal high damage with its minigun. As these zombie variants are incredibly dangerous and can easily overwhelm an unprepared team, taking care of them as soon as they rear their heads should be a priority.

Don’t Forget To Experiment

While Call of Duty: Vanguard allows new players to immediately jump into a zombies mode with preset classes, custom loadouts are also allowed. Players can choose a primary weapon, secondary weapon, and artifact to begin combat with.

For example, if a player enjoys using a weapon that they want to make sure they have access to, custom loadouts can allow for said weapon to be immediately usable. Of course, any weapon brought in from a loadout, custom or not, begins at the lowest possible damage level, so finding upgrades and other methods to grow stronger is still of massive import.
