The 10 LongestRunning SNL Cast Members

Saturday Night Live has been broadcasting live from New York since 1975. Regarded as one of the best sketch comedy shows of all time, SNL has introduced the world to some of the funniest comedians in modern times, some of whom stayed with the show for quite a while.

After 46 years and counting on the air, which cast SNL cast members have been on the show longer than anyone else? Former SNL greats like Maya Rudolph and Jason Sudeikis barely are just a couple of them. Meanwhile, current cast members Kyle Mooney and Colin Jost could possibly earn their status as some of the longest-running cast members in coming years. And one cast member is closing in on 20 years with the show.

Kevin Nealon – 9 Years

The 10 LongestRunning SNL Cast Members

Kevin Nealon was part of the SNL cast for nine seasons from 1986 to 1995. Nealon is likely best remembered as the Weekend Update anchor from 1991 to 1994. For a good portion of the 90s, Kevin Nealon held the individual record for longest running cast member ever.

Since SNL, Nealon has starred in the hit television show Weeds and can be seen in popular Adam Sandler movies Happy Gilmore and The Wedding Singer.

Tim Meadows – 9 Years

The 10 LongestRunning SNL Cast Members

A a previous record holder of the longest-running cast member title, Tim Meadows just barely took Kevin Nealon’s spot upon concluding his time with the show. He too was an SNL cast member for nine seasons, with his tenure being from 1991 until 2000.

Outside of SNL, Meadows is perhaps best known for his role as Principal Duvall in Mean Girls. Still actively landing roles in various comedy movies and television shows today, Tim Meadows will undoubtedly go down as one of SNL’s best Black cast members ever.

Cecily Strong – 9 Years

The 10 LongestRunning SNL Cast Members

Cecily Strong has been with the SNL cast since 2012 and is still an active repertory player to this day. After establishing herself with hilarious characters such as The Girl You Wish You Hadn’t Started a Conversation With at a Party, as well as a short stint as a Weekend Update anchor from 2013 to 2014, she has just begun her 10th season with the show as one of the most memorable current cast members.

Strong has been nominated for two Emmys in recent years for her performances on Saturday Night Live. Outside of the show, she most recently was the star of Apple TV+ series Schmigadoon! with Keegan-Michael Key.

Aidy Bryant – 9 Years

The 10 LongestRunning SNL Cast Members

Also with SNL since 2012, Aidy Bryant has made a great name for herself as a comedian on the show. She has just entered into her 10th season with the show, earning three Emmy nominations along the way.

On top of Saturday Night Live, Bryant starred in the comedy-drama series Shrill for which she also earned an Emmy nomination. With the success of Shrill, it seems that SNL might only be the very beginning of Bryant’s career should she end up leaving the show soon after her long tenure.

Kate McKinnon – 9 Years

The 10 LongestRunning SNL Cast Members

Considered SNL’s current leading lady, Kate McKinnon continues to be one of the show’s longest-running cast members, having joined in 2012. However, McKinnon joined the SNL cast one season before her co-stars Cecily String and Aidy Bryant and has just started her 11th season with the show.

With so many iconic SNL characters under Kate McKinnon’s belt, she has proven that she is effortlessly hilarious and can impersonate nearly anyone. Impressively, McKinnon has received eight Emmy nominations over the course of nine years for her work on SNL, winning two in 2016 and 2017. Kate McKinnon is also the first out gay female cast member ever to be on the show.

Al Franken – 11 Years

The 10 LongestRunning SNL Cast Members

A show writer since SNL’s debut, Al Franken eventually joined as a cast member and racked up 10 seasons total, appearing sporadically between 1977 and 1995. Interestingly, even after 11 years as a cast member with SNL, Franken was never upgraded from featured to repertory player.

Franken ultimately took a break from comedy when he was elected as a United States Senator for that state of Minnesota in 2008. However, Franken resigned from office in 2018 after receiving multiple accusations of sexual harassment.

Fred Armisen – 11 Years

The 10 LongestRunning SNL Cast Members

Another SNL cast member known for his iconic characters is Fred Armisen. On the show from 2002 to 2013, Armisen was a popular cast member for 11 seasons. He is one of the many successful former cast members to return to the show as a host, doing so in 2016.

Armisen can be found in a wide variety of hit movies and TV shows outside of SNL, the most notable being his quirky comedy Portlandia, co-created with Carrie Brownstein. Along with his comedic skill, he is also a dedicated musician and currently leads the band on Late Night With Seth Meyers.

Seth Meyers – 13 Years

The 10 LongestRunning SNL Cast Members

An SNL cast member for 13 seasons from 2001 to 2014, Seth Meyers is now a recognized face of American late-night television. He is best remembered on SNL for his time as the Weekend Update anchor starting in 2006.

Although Meyers left SNL to host his own show, Late Night (replacing Jimmy Fallon), he did return in 2018 as a host. While Meyers is not the longest-running cast member, he does hold the record for longest-running Weekend Update anchor (but Colin Jost is currently not far behind).

Darrell Hammond – 14 Years

The 10 LongestRunning SNL Cast Members

Darrell Hammond is likely best remembered for portraying Bill Clinton, still one of the best impressions of a U.S. president on SNL. His tenure with the show lasted 14 seasons between 1995 and 2009.

For quite a while, Darrell Hammond held the record for longest-running cast member. Although his record has since been beat, Hammond is still actively part of SNL as the show’s announcer, replacing the late Don Pardo in 2014.

Kenan Thompson – 18 Years

Joining in 2003 and still with the show to this day, nobody comes close to Kenan Thompson’s record as longest-running SNL cast member. He started off as a Nickelodeon star, making a name for himself on children’s comedy shows like All That and Kenan & Kel in the ’90s. Thompson essentially leaped right from kid’s content to mainstream comedy upon joining Saturday Night Live.

With such a far lead ahead of the rest, it may be a while before any other cast member beats Kenan’s longest-standing cast member record (if it happens at all). If Thompson stays with SNL through 2023, he will celebrate 20 years with the show.
