The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It remains on track for a concurrent theatrical and HBO Max release on June 4, 2021. As the third official Conjuring title, the film marks the eighth entry in the branched-out franchise behind The Conjuring, Annabelle, The Conjuring 2, Annabelle: Creation, The Nun, The Curse of La Llorona, and Annabelle Comes Home.

While The Conjuring series relies less on graphic carnage and exorbitant kill counts and more on atmospheric dread and suggestive off-screen violence, there are still a startling array of fatalities that are bound to shake even the most hardened of horror fans.

10 Higgins’ Vicious Death – Annabelle (2014)

One of the scariest death scenes in The Conjuring universe comes when Annabelle “Janice” Higgins (Tree O’Toole) dies by suicide while being demonically possessed.

The death occurs after Janice and her boyfriend break into the house of her mother with the intent to kill her. While the police arrive in time to prevent such, they can neither arrest Janice nor save her before she takes her own life.

9 Bee’s Vehicular Manslaughter – Annabelle Creation (2017)

It’s always extremely upsetting anytime a child is killed in a horror movie. In the case of Annabelle Creation, young Bee’s (Samara Lee) tragic death comes as more of a shocking emotional gut-punch than most.

As her parents change a flat tire on a dusty rural road in 1947, innocent seven-year-old Annabelle “Bee” Mullins plays with her doll. As an approaching truck nears, the demonic doll forces Bee to dart into the road to chase after a rolling lugnut. Just as Bee reaches the middle of the road, she’s shockingly struck dead in a way that appears accidental.

8 Nun Massacre – The Nun (2018)

Since many of the fatalities in The Nun occur off-screen or happen as a twisted imaginary figment, the brutal reliquary massacre must be included. While little blood is visibly shed, the sheer number of lives lost in a single salvo makes it one of the more impressive death scenes in the series.

When Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) is beckoned to the reliquary, she joins seven nuns in prayer to rid evil from the church. However, just as they kneel, forceful demonic energy erupts and catapults the nuns across the room and they instantly die on impact.

7 Evelyn’s Sacrificial Death – Annabelle (2014)

Not all of the deaths in The Conjuring series are born out of malice. Case in point, Evelyn (Alfre Woodard) in Annabelle. With a firm grasp on the consequences of her actions, Evelyn heroically sacrifices herself to save Mia and Leah’s souls from demonic possession.

Upon realizing the threat facing young Leah and Mia, Evelyn bravely picks up the doll and leaps out of a window with the Annabelle doll in tow.

6 DeFeo Family Massacre – The Conjuring 2 (2016)

Based on the real-life DeFeo family massacre that took place in 1974, the creepy recreation of the infamous Amityville Horror as seen through the eyes of medium Lorraine Warren’s (Vera Farmiga) is truly unsettling.

As a way to determine whether or not the murders were directed by a demonic curse, Lorraine manages to infiltrate Ronald DeFeo’s mind and body in the moments before he kills his two parents and pre-adolescent siblings in suspenseful slow-motion.

5 Samuel Mullins’ Crucifixion – Annabelle Creation (2017)

While his ultimate death occurs off-screen, the baleful build-up and piercing payoff of Samuel Mullins’ (Anthony LaPaglia) demise remains alarmingly effective.

Along with his highly pious wife Esther (Miranda Otto), Samuel spends much of his time parading around his with a crucifix in tow. However, when Annabelle assumes the bodily form of a little girl to lull Samuel into submission, he attempts to ward her off by flashing a crucifix in her face. The deleterious demon bends and breaks Samuel’s fingers backward, one by one, before striking him with a grisly death blow.

4 Sister Victoria’s Hanging – The Nun (2018)

One of the goriest and grisliest deaths in the franchise comes in The Nun’s pre-credit opening scene. In addition to the graphic carnage, the notion of death by suicide prompted by demonic suggestion is quite upsetting.

In 1952 Romania, Sister Victoria (Charlotte Hope) and her colleague are accosted by a malefic force dressed as a nun. After her friend is killed, Victoria becomes possessed by Valak, who implants the nun with the urge to take her own life.

3 The Weeping Woman’s Impalement – The Curse Of La Llorona (2019)

While the predominant deaths in The Curse of La Llorona come via drowning, the ultimate demise of the demonic Weeping Woman at the end of the film comes as a tense and terrifying surprise.

Cornered in a dark attic by La Llorona, Anna (Linda Cardellini) attempts to protect her two young charges from harm. As Llorona charges forward, a priest slides a crucifix toward Anna, who picks up the piece of wood and impales the demon in the chest.

2 Sister Mullins’ Death – Annabelle Creation (2017)

In terms of graphic imagery, Sister Esther Mullins’ death in Annabelle Creation is the most barbarous of the bunch. Worse yet, her body is discovered by a group of children.

After a slowly-mounted, suspenseful build-up, in which Mullins extends a crucifix for protection, she’s brutally attacked. When her body is discovered, it is an expectedly gory scene.

1 Valak’s Death – The Conjuring 2 (2016)

Considering what a formidable foe Valak proved to be throughout the series, including a phony demise in The Nun, the demon’s dizzying and much-deserved death at the hands of Lorraine Warren in The Conjuring 2 is the best of the entire series.

After distracting Valak’s attack on her husband Ed (Patrick Wilson), Lorraine usurps Valak’s evil powers by reciting a biblical incantation by calling him “the defiler, the profane, the marquis of snakes.” The spell completely undoes Valak and sends the evil demon back to the pits of hell.
