Marky Mark broke out as a hip-hop artist tailor-made for MTV’s final years focused on music – not programming. His run in one of the most iconic Calvin Klein underwear campaigns in history, alongside supermodel Kate Moss, blew his pop culture status wide open. But it was a small part on the set of his first movie, Renaissance Man, directed by a true member of Hollywood royalty, Penny Marshall, that delivered an auspicious start to Mark Wahlberg’s future life on the silver screen.

The Basketball Diaries
Alongside the about-to-break-out Leonardo DiCaprio – Wahlberg’s unpolished, yet fierce intensity in The Basketball Diaries showed his potential and also demonstrated that he was more than just a popular singer who was desperate to be an actor. Wahlberg was hard to ignore on screen, commanding attention even when the spotlight was on DiCaprio. The role was a great warm-up for his is next big breakout role, which was very similar in tone and performance, in 1996’s Fear.

Boogie Nights
Easily one of the best films of the past 25 years, Paul Thomas Anderson’s masterful Boogie Nights was as career defining as it was controversial for its headline star. Wahlberg’s iconic portrayal of adult film star Dirk Diggler is burned into movie history. But the breakout dramatic performance that pushed Wahlberg to the next level of stardom is one he wouldn’t do again, citing his faith and role as a father. However, the ability of Wahlberg to take audiences on such an emotional and believable roller-coaster was surprising, considering how new he was to acting.

Three Kings
One of the most legendary film shoots for all the dramatic tensions that played out behind the scenes, David O. Russell’s Three Kings was the first of three big films, by three big directors, in just three short years for Wahlberg (the others were Wolfgang Petersen’s The Perfect Storm and Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes). The trio easily solidified Wahlberg’s A-list status between 1999 and 2001. But his role in the Gulf War-themed Three Kings gave movie-goers, and producers, the first big glimpse of his future, more mature-themed action roles.

The Departed
When an actor gets to work with Martin Scorsese, they really have made it to the top of Hollywood mountain. The legendary director’s The Departed, which was a reimagining of the Hong Kong police thriller Infernal Affairs, gave Wahlberg the playing field to unleash one of his most memorable characters. The delightfully foulmouthed, savagely inappropriate and scathing Staff Sergeant Sean Dignam is one for the ages. Audiences would surely delight in watching a super-cut of his acid-tongued dialogue, as Wahlberg unleashes one verbal assassination after another. Yet, despite the shocking dialogue, he keeps his character believable.

The Other Guys
Playing alongside Will Ferrell, who was at the height of his comedic fame, The Other Guys gave Wahlberg the chance to play the ‘straight man’ against a strong comedic partner. Taking a head-first dive into comedy, Wahlberg was able to deliver just the right set ups to give Ferrell the laughs he needed. It helped give the familiar buddy cop tropes a refreshing update. Sharing screen time with the larger than life Dwayne Johnson and the masterful Samuel L Jackson, Wahlberg again showed he could give other A-list stars the space necessary to support the story. It laid a new foundation that eventually saw Wahlberg hold down his own blockbuster comedic franchise, Ted.

The Fighter
Wahlberg’s third time working with David O. Russell helped usher in the next phase of his career, with special attention being given to compelling true stories adapted for the big screen. The Fighter is the story of street-tough boxing hero Micky Ward and his deeply troubled, yet equally talented pugilist brother. It was a more mature dramatic performance than most of his career had produced up to that point. The raw, angst-filled hometown-hero story of the blue-collar fighter gave Wahlberg a chance to hold up his end of the screen alongside two of the finest actors working today, Christian Bale, who snagged an Oscar for his role, and Amy Adams. It speaks to Wahlberg’s ability to flow and find a rhythm with such skilled, intense performers like Bale and Adams.

Lone Survivor
The incredible true story of Marcus Luttrell and his heroic group of fellow Navy Seals from Operation Red Wings, Lone Survivor helped usher in a slew of similarly themed stories under the thoughtful eye of director Peter Berg. Berg beat out other directors, like Oliver Stone, after gaining approval from the Navy Cross and Purple Heart recipient to tell his story of survival from Afghanistan. Berg carefully chose Wahlberg to portray Luttrell, who was the only survivor from his four-person team of Seals, pinned down by the Taliban. This kind of humanizing portrayal of a controversial subject matter can often be lost in the glare of Hollywood lights.

Deepwater Horizon
The second pairing with Peter Berg behind the camera, and the first of a double header for 2016, Deepwater Horizon had Wahlberg portray one of the survivors of the catastrophic Deepwater Horizon oil drilling rig disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. One of the most important parts behind Wahlberg’s portrayal of Williams was ensuring his performance didn’t detract from the heroics of others, and didn’t overly dramatize his part in the combined rescue efforts of his fellow rig workers. Wahlberg’s final big scene, in which he finally breaks down from the emotional turmoil from his brush with death, is particularly poignant.

Patriots Day
The second Wahl-Berg pairing that year came with Patriots Day, the inspiring true story of the ghastly terrorist bombings of the Boston Marathon. While many of the events and people portrayed are real, Wahlberg’s character is not. Instead, he is inspired by real life legendary Boston P.D. Sergeant Detective, Danny Keeler. The film, and Wahlberg, help capture the horrific events, without needlessly dramatizing the terrible attack, or the circumstances around it. The movie easily captures the heroics and heartbreak of that fateful day and the events that followed, but Wahlberg doesn’t hog the spotlight. While he gives a standout performance, he doesn’t necessarily stand apart from the movie. He delivers just enough, but under the careful guidance of Berg behind the camera, manages to not overshadow the bigger, more important story at play.

Instant Family
Wahlberg has worked hard to carve out a role as a family friendly movie star, not just an action junkie. His portrayal in Instant Family was a dramatization of the life real-life story of the film’s director and writer, who, along with his wife, adopted three children out of foster care. The incredibly heartwarming tale gave Wahlberg a chance to co-star with one of today’s funniest and most talented dramatic performers, Rose Byrne, who shines in just about anything she does. But the story also gave viewers a great reminder of Wahlberg’s range and ability to channel a wider swath of emotions in more family-oriented films than his action-heavy resume might suggest.
