The Big Bang Theory is a show that has many themes. However, what was seen as the most important component of the show was the theme of friendship. For twelve years, fans watched some iconic partnerships form. Fans had the pleasure of seeing the bromance between Leonard and Sheldon grow and also witnessed an unconventional bond between Amy and Penny form.
Even the friendship between Stuart and Mrs. Wolowitz had a special place in fans’ hearts. However, there was one relationship that went underdeveloped – Leonard and Amy’s. Despite having a lot in common, the two weren’t exactly the best of friends. Don’t believe it? Here are 10 reasons that prove why they had the weakest friendship of all.
10 They Didn’t Get Along At First
When Amy was first introduced to the show, she was completely different from the woman we saw at the end. Similar to Sheldon, she was depicted as emotionless, condescending, and judgmental. She was also very rude to the gang, particularly Howard and Leonard, whose intelligence and social skills were mocked.
As a result, Leonard pulled Sheldon aside and told him that he thought Amy was “sanctimonious and obnoxious” (“The Zazzy Substitution”). Not the best of starts to a friendship.
9 They Only Bond Through Sheldon And Penny
If it wasn’t for Sheldon and Penny, Amy and Leonard wouldn’t have even spoken to one another. For the majority of the series, Amy only ever came to their apartment to hang out with Sheldon. She never went over to speak or hang out with Leonard.
Then, when Penny moved in with Leonard, Amy only came over to talk to her. The fault didn’t entirely lie with Amy – Leonard didn’t exactly make an effort to talk to her either, only going over to her apartment to pick Sheldon up. They had no interest in becoming good friends.
8 They Are More Like Work Acquaintances
Most fans will agree that Amy and Leonard’s relationship was similar to that of work acquaintances than real friends. If fans take a closer look at their relationship, you will notice they hardly talked about anything personal. They mainly talked about science and the experiments they were working on.
It’s strange really, especially since they have a lot more in common. They both have estranged relationships with their mothers, they both had difficult childhoods, and they have personal connections to Harvard. Yet, not once did they discuss this.
7 Amy Not Supportive Of His Relationship With Priya
Another reason why Amy and Leonard weren’t the best of friends was because of her loyalty to Penny. In season 4, Leonard and Priya decided to make their relationship official, much to Penny and Raj’s dismay. When Amy found out, she wasted no time in rushing over to console Penny.
For weeks after, Amy then ostracizes Priya and makes her feel unwelcome out of loyalty to Penny. It’s not fair to Leonard, as a true friend would have been glad that he was happy and tried to make her feel part of the group.
6 They Hardly Hang Out Together Alone
Some fans may not have noticed but Leonard and Amy never hang out together alone. Other than the time they went to a wedding and them recreating experiments from their childhood, Amy and Leonard never really hung out alone together. It was always in groups.
Once, Leonard asked Amy why they never did and she replied that it was because it was always “awkward and weird” (“The Anything Can Happen Recurrence”). “Weird” is not exactly the word you would use to describe hanging out with your friends.
5 Leonard Wasn’t Comfortable In Amy’s Presence
Another reason as to why Leonard and Amy weren’t real friends was the fact that Leonard wasn’t comfortable in her presence. In “The Pulled Groin Extrapolation,” Leonard expressed his discomfort at the neurobiologist overstaying her welcome in his apartment.
He also asked Penny to give him an excuse to not take Amy with him to pick up Sheldon because he didn’t want to spend time with her (“The Locomotion Interruption”). If they were true friends, Leonard shouldn’t have felt this way.
4 Amy Doesn’t Care About Leonard’s Problems
Another episode that proved Leonard and Amy weren’t as close was “The Explosion Implosion.” In this episode, Leonard confides in Amy about his mother’s newly formed friendship with Penny. When he expresses his worries about their closeness, Amy dismisses his concerns.
Instead, she starts to become insecure about her own friendship with Penny and ignores Leonard’s continued ramblings. It’s quite selfish of Amy to turn this issue into her problem, especially when Leonard was looking for some reassurance and got none. The fact that she didn’t care to help him proves they weren’t friends.
3 Leonard Didn’t Care That She Was Upset
It wasn’t just Amy that didn’t care about Leonard’s problems, he didn’t care enough about hers either. In “The Isolation Permutation,” Amy was shown to be deeply upset when she finds out that Bernadette and Penny went dress shopping without her.
When Sheldon expresses his concerns over Amy not responding to his messages, Leonard offers to drive him to her apartment. However, instead of staying to see if she was okay, he leaves, saying “it wasn’t his problem.” If this is how he reacts when a friend is upset, Amy was better off without.
2 Amy Used Him In Experiments Without Permission
On several occasions, Amy has also been seen to take advantage of her friendship with Leonard. In “The Comic Book Store Regeneration,” Leonard was angry when he found out that Sheldon and Amy had conducted an experiment on him and Penny to see if they were smarter than a chimpanzee.
Although they apologized for this incident, Amy does it again in “The Matrimonial Metric” when she agrees to pit Leonard off against their other friends to see if he should be Best Man. No friend would take away someone’s dignity like this.
1 Leonard Sided With Sheldon In The Break-Up
In the season 9 premiere, Amy makes her break-up with Sheldon official when he refuses to give her the space she wants. As expected, loyalties are divided in the gang, with most siding with Amy. However, Leonard is the only one to check in with Sheldon and make sure he is okay.
It is also important to note that Leonard never checks in with Amy to make sure she was fine, which is the complete opposite of what a friend does. Once more, it just proves that Leonard only tolerated Amy because of Sheldon and Penny.
