The Deep is a joke character in The Boys. However, there are ten rather pressing questions about The Deep that is yet to be answered.

When it comes to superheroes that have become a joke in modern culture, it goes without saying that Aquaman would be the first name that comes to the mind of pretty much anyone. So, it was only a given that a show parodying superhero culture would obviously make its Aquaman inspiration the butt of most jokes in the series.

This is exactly what happens to The Deep — while initially coming off as a powerful member of The Seven with a ton of influence, later developments in the story expose him for a weird creep with barely any novel powers and a ton of insecurities that he tries to hide behind by using his status as a shield of sorts.

The Deep is — ironically enough — one of the surprisingly deeper characters in the series… but that doesn’t mean his character is written perfectly. If anything, there are ten rather pressing questions about The Deep that is yet to be answered.

10 How Did He Even Enter The Seven In The First Place?

For someone who’s as weak, unnecessary, and ridiculed as The Deep, it’s a wonder as to how he even managed to make it into The Seven in the first place.

Compared to the other members on the team, it doesn’t really seem like The Deep has anything particularly unique up his arsenal. So, how did he break into the group of Earth’s mightiest superheroes?

9 Why Would Vought Place Someone As Boring As Him In The Seven?

It’s a given that the higher-ups at Vought would’ve had the final say when it came to including The Deep in The Seven, which is why this decision is even more befuddling.

For a company that is about power, pride, reputation, and the surface-level portrayal of diversity, it’s weird that an unremarkable, white cis-man like The Deep managed to pass by their radar.

8 Aren’t The Seven Too Harsh On Him At Times?

That being said, one can’t deny that The Seven can definitely go too hard on The Deep at times. The most glaring example of this is when A-Train and Homelander joke about how he gets intimate with fish, which certainly grinds his gears.

And yet, even after all this ridicule and abuse…

7 Why Does He Still Desperately Want To Be A Part Of The Seven?

After being ejected from The Seven for his behavior, The Deep ends up taking some pretty drastic measures in order to retake his place in this elite group… but why?

It never seemed like The Deep was all that happy in The Seven anyway, and it wouldn’t be a stretch to assume that he’d attained a ton of money in his career. What was stopping him from stepping back and doing something that was more in line with his interests, like marine biology or something else along the same lines?

6 Why Was He Okay With Marrying Someone He Didn’t Even Love?

In fact, The Deep is so desperate to get back into The Seven that he does literally everything that the Church of the Collective asks of him… including marrying a random person who seemed like the perfect devoted American wife.

Did The Deep not realize how insane this suggestion even was? Clearly, he didn’t, since he actually went through with it!

5 How Did He Not Realize That The Church Of The Collective Was Playing Him?

Given all the weird things that the Church of the Collective made him do — including the act of donating tons of money — The Deep should’ve realized how badly he was being manipulated.

Was his need to rejoin The Seven so intense that it blinded him to everything else?

4 Why Does A-Train Regain His Spot On The Seven Before Him?

That being said, it’s not like it wasn’t in the best interests of the Church to pull some strings and get him back into The Seven — he was a valuable asset who could’ve helped them out from the inside, after all.

Instead, what ends up happening is that A-Train — a person who’s barely helped out the Church — ends up getting a spot before The Deep, which just seems like a stupid move.

3 Where Does He Even Muster The Courage To Blackmail Starlight?

For someone who’s generally shown to be weak, submissive, and treated like a joke throughout the series, one must admit that The Deep’s introduction in The Boys certainly makes him look like a dominant figure… perhaps a bit too much at times.

However, given how pathetic he’s shown to be over the course of the series, it’s weird how he has the guts to blackmail someone as powerful as Starlight. Sure, she might’ve been a naïve person at that point… but how does someone like The Deep turn his personality around completely just to exploit this poor woman?

2 How Is He Okay With Someone Touching His Sensitive Gills?

If The Deep had the guts to blackmail Starlight, then he definitely should have established dominance over a meager groupie — especially a groupie who was touching one of the most sensitive parts of his body.

Instead, The Deep just ends up looking like more of a pathetic figure while a groupie — of all the people — ended up violating his body to satiate her perverseness.

1 Aren’t His Gills Rendered Ineffective If They’re Covered By His Suit?

Speaking of his gills, it’s a well-known fact that The Deep is incredibly sensitive about this growth, to the point where he constantly feels the need to hide them with his costume.

However, upon closely examining this fact, it must be said that the idea of covering a body part that helps in one’s breathing is quite a stupid thing to do indeed. This would’ve been fine if The Deep took off his suit underwater… but one can clearly see his suit covering his gills in the scene where he tries to stop Butcher and The Boys in their tracks.
