The Boys Season 3 Will Reveal More About Black Noir

Eric Kripke, showrunner for the wildly popular Amazon original The Boys, reveals that the show’s upcoming third season will further explore the enigmatic Black Noir. After a successful first season, The Boys season 2 premiered on September 4, 2020. Despite some controversy surrounding Amazon’s decision to release the show weekly instead of dropping it all at once, the second season still received mostly positive reviews. The show was renewed for a third season a couple of months ahead of the second season premiere.

Black Noir, one of the members of “The Seven,” serves mainly as an enforcer for Vought, the mysterious corporation with a monopoly over the superhero market. Little is known about Black Noir – the show hasn’t even revealed what he looks like under his mask. He doesn’t speak; he’s virtually indestructible and has a questionable morality, to put it mildly. The most concrete information we have on him is that he has a lethal allergy to tree nuts after Queen Maeve uses an Almond Joy to subdue him in the second season’s penultimate episode. He was confirmed to still be alive in the season 2 finale but in a vegetative state.

However, fans of The Boys will be getting more Black Noir, as Kripke (via TVline) confirmed that the show’s third season would explore the character further. Kripke acknowledged that he knows fans are interested in finding out more about the character and that he is more than willing to give fans what they want. Check out his full statement below:

We’re exploring [Black Noir] even more in Season 3, because we are giving the fans what they want.

While The Boys is an adaptation of a comic book series of the same name, there are some pretty significant differences between them. Adaptations will always have slight differences in plot or individual characters’ personalities; the show has also made massive, fundamental changes from the source material. Becca, Billy Butcher’s wife, was killed during childbirth in the comic. She is very much alive at the start of season 2 of the show and plays a significant role in the plot. Fans of the comic will know that Black Noir’s backstory plays a substantial role in the overall story. But, given the show’s willingness to diverge from the source material, it’s unknown how much Black Noir will share in common with his comic counterpart.

For now, it remains to be seen how the show will handle Black Noir going forward. His comic story would undoubtedly make compelling material, but there’s no guarantee that Kripke and the writing team will choose to go in that direction. There are parts of the story that are done better in the show, so the idea of a completely new Black Noir storyline is an appealing option. Either way, the concept of exploring Black Noir further in The Boys season 3 is unquestionably an exciting prospect.
