The Boys Why Homelander & Stormfronts Romance Is Doomed

The Boys has a new power couple, but the romance between Homelander and Stormfront is doomed. The world’s neediest and most narcissistic superhero is joining forces with Stormfront, a white supremacist whose plan likely involves creating a master race of Supes who will snuff out the perceived threat posed by the most marginalized members of society. Homelander, who has been on a downward spiral since Madelyn’s Stillwell’s death, has seen his popularity plummet. Stormfront has offered Homelander what he craves most — unconditional love and the adoration of millions. However, happily ever after isn’t in the cards for this deadly duo.

The coupling of Stormfront and Homelander was an unlikely one from the start. When Stormfront first joined The Seven, Homelander viewed her as a threat, convinced she was trying to usurp him as the leader of the group. As his approval ratings tanked, hers skyrocketed. Homelander’s fragile ego took another hit when Edgar Wright made it clear Compound V was Vought’s most valuable commodity, not a superhero. Homelander looked elsewhere for validation, trying to force familial affection between himself and his son Ryan which ended with Ryan telling Homelander he hated him. With his only sense of self-satisfaction from turning a reluctant Maeve into the poster child for LGBTQ superheroes, Homelander soon found Stormfront to be his only remaining lifeline and ally.

Now that Stormfront has revealed her history and agenda, and Homelander seems to be on board, what could get in their way? Homelander doesn’t know about Sage Grove, where Vought is conducting its Compound V on unwilling would-be Supes — Compound V horrors, like a man with deadly snake-like genitalia (known in the comics as Love Sausage). Homelander was raised in a lab, and he resents being deprived of a normal life. Furthermore, he detests those who deceive him. Stormfront’s decision not to reveal Sage Grove’s existence will undoubtedly serve as a trigger on several fronts. Homelander’s still traumatized by his experiences as a test subject, and she’ll be another woman who betrayed him. It’s unlikely Sage Grove is the only thing Stormfront is hiding from her new beau.

At this point, it’s unclear if Stormfront’s affection for Homelander is genuine. Stormfront sees Homelander as Frederick Vought’s triumph — or at least, she claims to. Stormfront is manipulative, and her early efforts to taunt and emasculate Homelander caused him to expose his vulnerabilities. He’s the biggest obstacle standing between her and achieving her goals. She (presumably) can’t defeat him, so recruiting him is the only viable option. Homelander’s feelings are more transparent, but will it turn out that Stormfront is just a stand-in for Madelyn? It wasn’t long ago that he was still mourning the woman with whom he had a twisted Oedipal obsession.

Homelander may go along with Stormfront’s cultural cleansing plan for a while, but it contradicts the pro-America values that were instilled in him as a child. Those values have been twisted and perverted by fame, ambition, and ego, but they are still an ingrained part of his identity. Stormfront promises him an army of devoted soldiers — but they exist to fight for a cause that he doesn’t care about. Homelander has a disdain for people as a whole, but he doesn’t share Stormfront’s alt-right views, which are really a continuation of her Nazi past. Homelander’s ideology derives from a strong sense of American patriotism, and there’s nothing “American” about German Nazism. She’s leading him down a path the other members of The Seven won’t follow, especially A-Train (who is on track to betray Vought anyways). Homelander relishes his high-profile role as the head of the group, and the more fractured the group becomes, the more his uncertainty grows.

Homelander is jealous and possessive, so he’ll demand that Stormfront makes him her priority. Stormfront’s passion for seeing her late husband’s vision realized supersedes any feelings she might have for Homelander. He’s attracted to strong women, but he also tries to subjugate them when they overpower him. He was ready to kill Stormfront when she opposed him, and their egos are destined to clash in the future. The Boys has introduced a new love interest for Homelander, but she will wind up being a formidable foe instead.
