The Crown 10 Other Roles The Cast Have Been In

Since 2016, Netflix’s The Crown has been gracing us with a recap on Brittish history and the life of Queen Elizabeth II. We’ve seen her rise to the throne after the death of her beloved father, King George VI, her tense relationship with Prince Philip, and her struggle to be a “normal” woman and the Queen of the United Kingdom.

The Crown has been nominated for and won countless awards and has a third season coming out this November. To follow the long life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II, the Netflix series will have a new cast, with Oscar winner Olivia Colman as the Queen. This article, however, will focus on the cast of the first two seasons. This talented group of actors and actresses all sold us on The Crown, so let’s take a look at some of the other works they’ve been in.

10 CLAIRE FOY

Claire Foy plays Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown’s first two seasons and she does a stupendous job. From the Queen’s body language to the draw of her accent, Foy nailed it. She hails from the UK, is a mother of one, and landed her first gig in 2008, according to IMDb.

For two years Foy portrayed Lady Persephone Towyn in the TV series Upstairs Downstairs. She was also in the TV series Crossbones as Kate. Most recently, she was Lisbeth Salander in The Girl in the Spider’s Web and has a movie, Louis Wain, coming out in 2020.

9 MATT SMITH

British actor Matt Smith may be most famous for his time as The Doctor in Doctor Who from 2010-2014. From there, he’s also done multiple Doctor Who-related works. But when he’s not being The Doctor, he was busy portraying the bored and confused Prince Philip in The Crown. Smith did an excellent job in his role but now that his time as Philip has ended, he has two works in post-production set to be released next year: Morbius and Last Night in Soho.

8 VANESSA KIRBY

Vanessa Kirby did a beautiful job portraying the Queen’s sister, Princess Margaret. In The Crown, we see Margaret fall off the deep end when she couldn’t marry the love of her life, Peter Townsend. As we later see, she finds love again with Lord Snowdon and has two children of her own.

In real life, Vanessa Kirby is 31 years old and was in The Frankenstein Chronicles from 2015-2017. She also starred as Alicia in Me Before You and was last seen as Hattie in Fast and the Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.

7 VICTORIA HAMILTON

Coming from London, actress Victoria Hamilton portrayed the Queen Mother in The Crown. We see her life come tumbling down when she loses her husband, and her daughter (whom she refers to as a child) becomes the new queen.

While Hamilton did a great job in the first two seasons, she’s also been in a ton of television series. From Lark Rise to Candleford to Doctor Foster: A Woman Scorned to Deep State, Hamilton is a hot commodity in the acting world.

6 JOHN LITHGOW

John Lithgow was the only American actor portraying a British person. The entire cast was from the UK except for Lithgow but his role as former Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, was so authentic, The Crown needed him for this role.

Many recognize Lithgow from his work as Jerry on How I Met Your Mother from 2011 to 2014. He was also the White Rabbit in Once Upon a Time in Wonderland and was Jud in Pet Semetary.

5 BEN MILES

Also from London, we have Ben Miles who portrayed Peter Townsend, Princess Margaret’s lover whom she was denied to marry. Miles’ role of Townsend was instrumental in the first season as both Margaret’s love and King George VI’s right-hand man. Outside of The Crown, Miles joined Victoria Hamilton in Lark Rise to Candleford and portrayed Patrick for four years in Coupling.

4 JARED HARRIS

Portraying King Geroge VI in the first season of The Crown, Jared Harris did an amazing job. In the series, we see King George VI falling ill but maintaining his composure to be strong for his family and his country. Harris filmed some flashback scenes throughout the series for us to see how he was as a father to his young girls.

Outside of The Crown, Harris has also been in Mad Men, Chernobyl, Poltergeist, The Terror, and a whole bunch more. He currently has two works in post-production: a short film titled Outside and a feature film called Morbius (alongside co-star Matt Smith).

3 JEREMY NORTHAM

It truly is amazing how much work went into making The Crown so authentic. When we look at Jeremy Northam in real life, he’s not as grey and certainly doesn’t have the thick mustache as his character Anthony Eden did. Eden was the Prime Minister after Churchill resigned and Northam did a marvelous job. As of late, Northam’s recently been in Official Secrets and was also Sir Thomas More in The Tudors.

2 PIP TORRENS

Again, the legwork to make each actor look like their character is outstanding. Pip Torrens had an influential role in The Crown as Tommy Lascelles, the Private Secretary of both King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II. Once he retired, we saw less of Tommy, but he still popped up here and there when the Queen needed his judgment.

Outside of The Crown, Pip Torrens is a busy man. Most recently he portrayed Herr Starr in the series Preacher and Cary Warleggan in Poldark.

1 WILL KEEN

Will Keen portrays Michael Adeane, the Private Secretary to Queen Elizabeth throughout The Crown. He does a fantastic job telling the Queen harsh news in a respectful manner. You may recognize Keen as Perales from The Three Musketeers and he was also Chief Officer Wilde in the Titanic mini series.
