The CWs Charmed Reboot Casts Another of Its Lead Sisters

The CW’s Charmed reboot has cast Sarah Jeffery as one of its lead sisters. The original Charmed series on The WB was a great success, running for eight seasons from 1998 to 2006. After plenty of delays and multiple changes, The CW is hoping to achieve some of the same magic with their reboot that The WB had the first time around.

CBS’s original plans for its own Charmed reboot fell apart last year, which was envisioned as an unconnected prequel series. That eventually led to an overhaul of the series in early 2018. The CW’s version will take place in the present day and focus on three sisters: Macy, Mel, and Madison Pruitt. But this time, the series will be set in a college town. Of course, just like the original series, the siblings discover they are witches and use their special powers to protect people from evil forces. And it seems the network plans on getting the show up-and-running quite soon, as casting has already begun.

Deadline reports that Sarah Jeffery has been cast as Madison, “a bubbly college freshman who finds witchcraft at odds with her goal of getting into a super-fun sorority.” She will be joining Melonie Diaz, who was recently cast as the middle sister, Mel, and Ser’Darius Blain, who plays Macy’s boyfriend. As it stands, Macy is the only leading role that hasn’t been filled yet.

Jeffery has already built a surprisingly prolific TV career, most recently appearing in all 26 episodes of the first two seasons of NBC’s police drama, Shades of Blue. The Canadian actress is still expected to appear as a regular in the third season, but according to Deadline, she’s been released from the show as a series regular for Charmed and could still appear in up to four episodes of a fourth season of Shades of Blue if it went that far.

It’s likely that Jeffery’s impressive sci-fi/fantasy résumé in her young career helped her land the role of Madison in Charmed. She most recently appeared in the episode “Ghouli” of the revived classic series The X-Files, and also had a recurring role in Fox’s Wayward Pines. Based on the description of Jeffery’s character, Madison will be the most reluctant to embrace her witchcraft power, which is expected to be mind-reading abilities. The CW made a good choice with Jeffery, who already has plenty of experience under her belt and can still deliver youthful energy to the show.

The Charmed reboot is clearly aiming to interweave its familiar tale of sisterly sorcery with timely and relevant social commentary. The show has been described as “a fierce, funny, feminist reboot” about a group of sisters whose goals include “vanquishing supernatural demons, tearing down the patriarchy, and maintaining familial bonds.” The hope for The CW is that Jeffery and the rest of the cast’s performances can help make the show as empowering as it will be entertaining.
