The Expanse Why Drummer Drinks The Whiskey (& How It Sets Up Her Ending)

Here’s the hidden meaning behind Drummer’s whiskey-downing exploits in The Expanse season 5. In the latest season of Amazon’s The Expanse adaptation, anyone not aligned with Marco Inaros has been enduring tough times, but few characters have suffered like Camina Drummer. When The Expanse season 5 began, Drummer was still carrying the guilt of Ashford’s death. Her old friend was murdered by Marco after Drummer herself gave the terrorist a stay of execution. But at least Drummer had her family of scavengers to lean on. Now, thanks to Marco, most of Drummer’s crew are drifting away from her, with the Free Navy’s Karal slowly creeping towards the captain’s chair.

Several times in The Expanse season 5, Camina Drummer has eyed up the full bottle of McGlenton’s Scotch Whiskey sitting on her shelf as a means of drinking those worries away, but each time, Drummer has resisted the temptation. The whiskey was a present bought for Klaes Ashford before his ill-fated mission to apprehend Marco Inaros in The Expanse season 4, but the Ghost Knife of Calisto told Drummer to keep it, and that they’d share the bottle when he returned. Following Ashford’s death, Drummer seemed to be saving the liquor for after she’d personally avenged her OPA comrade, but upon hearing that the Free Navy leader had killed another of her close friends, Naomi Nagata, Drummer finally breaks into the bottle.

It doesn’t take a qualified psychologist to see that Drummer is experiencing blind rage when reaching for the whiskey bottle. Her manic screaming and pained expression leave no doubt as to her emotional state. But it’s interesting that, back in The Expanse season 4, Drummer told Ashford that she only drinks when she’s angry. The bottle was never going to be opened while Drummer was mourning, or sorrowful, or conflicted – only when she reached the limit of her temper. Learning of Naomi’s (alleged) death is the final straw – two dead friends that Drummer could’ve saved if she hadn’t been so lenient towards Marco Inaros last season. After a season full of misery, Drummer’s drinking doesn’t represent a submission to the refuge of alcohol; it shows the character hitting her emotional breaking point.

By drinking the whiskey, Drummer also marks out a potentially dark future for herself. Previously, it seemed that the fateful bottle would only be opened when Marco was dead – symbolically fulfilling the promise she made to Ashford before his final departure. Although only one glass would be in use, the whiskey would still be enjoyed upon completion of Ashford’s original mission, as originally intended. The fact that Drummer has now cracked open the booze, however, suggests that either she’s given up on getting revenge (unlikely after the Naomi news), or she’s realized that taking Marco down is a one-way trip. Against the Free Navy’s firepower, and with most of her crew on his side, there’s no prospect of walking away alive if Drummer chooses to oppose the Inaros faction.

Naomi could, of course, continue to bite her tongue and play along as part of Marco’s fleet, but after seeing what befell the other OPA members who didn’t wholeheartedly get behind the Belt’s self-appointed leader, Drummer knows Marco will come for her sooner or later, even if she bends the knee. Camina Drummer’s role in the Expanse TV series is very different from her book counterpart, with Cara Gee’s character adopting elements from Michio Pa’s novel story. While The Expanse season 5 has introduced a “Michio” on Drummer’s crew, she appears to be a mere side character. Continuing Michio’s arc in the books, Drummer could defect from the Free Navy and line up alongside her friends on the Rocinante.
