The Flash’s First TeamUp With Hawkman is Pure Ezra Miller

The first time that Wally West’s Flash teamed up with Hawkman feels like a scene starring Ezra Miller’s portrayal of Barry Allen. As Miller’s take has been criticized for feeling more like Wally than Barry at times, this moment could be directly adapted.

Although Wally’s Flash had technically been on the Justice League alongside Hawkman throughout various incarnations, they hadn’t teamed up one-on-one until The Flash #191. The issue written by Geoff Johns, with art by Scott Kolins and Doug Hazlewood, features a memorable interaction between the two Leaguers. Similar to when Superman carried Batman on a flight out of convenience, Hawkman and Flash have both a humorous and heartfelt dynamic.

When the Flash AKA Wally West is in need of a lift, Hawkman picks him up and flies, causing him to dangle in the air. Wally is ecstatic to be held by such a legendary superhero, and gushes about his admiration. The scene is extremely reminiscent of the way that Ezra Miller plays the Flash in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Wally shouts at Hawkman, saying, “Don’t you want some help?” “Of course. I assumed you’d race up that overgrown vine.” “No. I mean, I can’t… I need… a lift.” Wally’s casual admission that he needs some help adds to his charm. As the scene continues, Hawkman uses the moment to speak some encouragement into the former Kid Flash, telling him that his uncle Barry would be proud of him.

Considering that Hawkman is about to make his DCEU debut portrayed by Aldis Hodge in Black Adam, there’s potential that such a scene could make its way into the movies. Even with the light controversy surrounding Ezra’s Flash lifting inspiration from Wally instead of Barry, a fun team-up moment would be an instant crowdpleaser. There has long been discussion and debate concerning Barry Allen and Wally West’s individual personalities imitating one another, depending on the context of a story. The similar criticism of Miller’s Flash might be disappointing to some fans, but at this point, there’s little reason to not embrace it. For a long time, the comics’ Barry has been said to have stollen Wally’s personality. Such accusations continue in Justice League Infinity, which expands the DC Animated Universe, where Wally West is the primary Flash.

As the Justice Society of America is set to show up in Black Adam, it’s only a matter of time before they cross paths with the Justice League. They might be set in the past, but with the multiverse being explored in The Flash, anything is possible. Although Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen doesn’t have an uncle, he is in a similar position to Wally, as he strives to make his own father to be proud of his heroics.
