The Legend of Korra 10 Underrated NonBenders That Dont Get Enough Credit

As the direct continuation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra follows the adventures of the next Avatar in line, Korra, a Waterbender from the Southern Water Tribe. As expected, Korra’s story introduces fans to many talented benders, but there are also plenty of characters who can’t manipulate water, earth, air, or fire, whose contributions and talents often go overlooked.

Given the fact that some who were originally non-benders, like Bumi and Zaheer, gained bending abilities due to Harmonic Convergence, they won’t be mentioned in this list. Instead, we’ll be taking a look at characters who weren’t born with the ability to bend and remained non-benders throughout the duration of the series.

10 President Raiko

Given that President Raiko and Korra were often at odds, he doesn’t get the credit he deserves for leading Republic City through some of its most precarious moments. He always put the people of Republic City above anyone else, refusing to provide aid to the Southern Water Tribe during the Water Tribe Civil War so that Republic City would be protected from the inevitable fallout that comes with involving oneself in an international conflict.

After seeing just how devastating Kuvira’s spirit energy cannon was, he opted to surrender in order to spare the lives of his citizens instead of putting up a fight, and though this would’ve given Kuvira an easy victory, it also would’ve ensured that no citizens of Republic City were harmed in the ensuing battle. Though he was eventually voted out of office, he ushered in a new era in which the people were allowed to choose their leaders.

9 Gommu

Gommu made an appearance in the very first episode of The Legend of Korra shortly after Korra arrived to Republic City. The two bonded over a meal of freshly cooked fish, and despite Gommu’s “homelessness”, he remained just as chipper as anyone else.

After the Equalists took over Republic City, Gommu not only gave Team Avatar a place of refuge in the underground commune that he resided in, but he used his skills as a former telegraph operator to send a message to Bumi in order to warn his forces to stay back from Republic City until they dealt with the Equalist airplanes. Although the message was ultimately intercepted by Hiroshi Sato, the message prevented Bumi’s fleet from suffering the same fate as General Iroh’s.

8 The Lieutenant

Despite never being given an official name, The Lieutenant played a huge role in Book 1. Serving as Amon’s righthand man, he was pretty much present in every conflict between Team Avatar and the Equalists. Not only was he an extremely proficient martial artist, but his electric sticks made him a danger to any bender that was foolish enough to try and restrain him with metal cables or allow him to get close.

Not too many non-benders are dedicated to their cause enough to charge at a polar bear dog head-on.

7 Prince Wu

When Prince Wu was first introduced, it became easy to see why Zaheer wanted to do away with all forms of monarchy. Prince Wu was unqualified to lead, and was a superficial coward who relied on others to do all the heavy lifting for him. As the conflict with Kuvira boiled to a climax, he rose to the occasion, impressing the likes of Mako, President Raiko, and even Lin.

His shining moment came when he led the evacuation of citizens out of Republic City, coming up with the genius idea of using badgermoles to get everyone safely out of the city. While he definitely wasn’t the most likable character around, he proved that he had a capacity for growth and change, which will always be the foundations of a legendary leader.

6 Pema

Even before she met Tenzin, Pema’s commitment to preserving Air Nomad culture as an Air Acolyte is highly admirable, and she deserves all the praise for embracing the role as the mother of the newest generation of young Airbending masters. Raising a group of young Airbenders when she herself wasn’t a bender is already tough work in itself, and she doesn’t get enough credit for raising three kids who all possess such strong heads, empathetic minds, and patience that they definitely didn’t get from their father, who often overreacts at the slightest inconvenience.

She also played a key role in facilitating the evacuation of Republic City’s citizens when Kuvira’s forces invaded, something which only a person with such a calm, level-headed persona could pull off.

5 Baatar Jr.

Despite not possessing the ability to bend earth, metal, or even air like the rest of his siblings, Baatar Jr. was a brilliant engineer whose genius not only aided Zaofu’s development, but Kuvira’s efforts as well. Even without bending, he becomes a formidable opponent when operating a mecha suit, and is always one step ahead of his enemy, making him very difficult to outsmart.

After helping Kuvira develop her spirit energy cannon, Baatar Jr. ended up helping Team Avatar by telling them just how to take down Kuvira’s giant mecha suit from the inside. This doesn’t erase everything he did, but he definitely redeemed himself after coming to realize just how heartless his fiance was.

4 Zhu Li

The Legend of Korra 10 Underrated NonBenders That Dont Get Enough Credit

Zhu Li is a remarkable assistant, not only tolerating Varrick’s antics without so much as a single complaint for most of the series, but she even went to jail with him after his arrest in Book 2. She’s so in-tune with Varrick that whenever he commands her to “Do the thing”, she always knows exactly what he wants her to do. After losing her for a brief period of time in Book 4, Varrick didn’t even know what to do with himself!

As seen in The Legend of Korra’s graphic novels, she played a crucial role in repairing an Earth Kingdom that had been ravaged by Kuvira’s actions, and due to her passion of making Republic City the best version of itself that it could be, she somehow managed to defeat President Raiko in the elections to become Republic City’s newest (and greatest) president.

3 Hiroshi Sato

Hiroshi Sato’s influence on the world shouldn’t be overlooked. He created the Satomobile, which revolutionized transportation of people and goods in Republic City, furthering its industrial development.

As despicable as he is for joining the Equalists and using his inventions to advance their malice-filled cause, it was his hard work that gave Asami a life that most could only dream of. Without his sacrifice in “Day of the Colossus”, Team Avatar would’ve never been able to stop Kuvira’s gigantic mecha suit.

2 Varrick

The Legend of Korra 10 Underrated NonBenders That Dont Get Enough Credit

Much of Varrick is still an enigma, especially given the fact that he’s already proven himself to be a flagrant liar, and while his interests sometimes coincided with those of Korra and her friends, he’s often aided them in some truly unconventional ways. Even when it looked like his escapades during Book 2 caused more trouble for Team Avatar, he actually benefitted them, from helping Asami prevent Future Industries from going bankrupt to making Bolin a movie star to even warning Korra of her uncle’s evil intentions.

Although he played a role in the development of Kuvira’s spirit energy cannon, he worked together with Asami to put a stop to Kuvira and reclaim his mistake.

1 Asami Sato

Being the only non-bending member of Korra’s Team Avatar, it can be easy to write Asami off as a less influential member of the team, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Her technological prowess enables her to operate any kind of vessel known to man, and her proficiency with the Equalist-favored electrified glove enables her to go toe-to-toe with some of the strongest benders.

She’s saved the others more times than anyone can count, from helping Korra and the Earth Queen’s men safely get out the desert, to outmaneuvering the Triple Threats after she and Mako found themselves the victims of a hoax. Without Asami, it’s safe to say that Amon, Unalaq, Zaheer, or Kuvira would’ve had their way.
