The MCUs Most Powerful Character Was Only Seen ONCE His Return Will Be TERRIFYING

Introduced in Eternals #9 by Jack Kirby, Eson the Searcher is one of the most prominent of the Celestials in the Marvel Universe. Capable of easily countering the power of many of Marvel’s other most powerful forces, the Celestials are some of the architects of the Marvel Universe and easily one of its strongest forces. This carries over to its immense power its Marvel Cinematic Universe incarnation showcased during a brief cameo in Phase 2, suggesting that Eson might be the most powerful single figure introduced in the cinematic universe. Now, the character is set up for a possible return in The Eternals, which could be a true reckoning for the MCU.

In the original Marvel Comics, the Celestials were responsible for the creation of the Eternals and the Deviants, leagues beyond their creations in terms of power. As of now, only two of this ancient and powerful race have ever been glimpsed — and only one of them in their prime. In Guardians of the Galaxy, the space-port of Knowhere is built into the severed head of a Celestial, long dead and now converted into a mining facility. The other came from a brief glimpse at Eson the Searcher within the Collector’s home. The Collector revealed the history of the Infinity Stones to the titular team and showed a vision of Eson utilizing the Power Stone to wipe out entire worlds with ease. This showing of power likely makes Eson the single most powerful force in the MCU.

Others in the galaxy have been shown to be powerful in their own right but still mortal in their own way. Even Thanos, who was able to use the Infinity Stones and the Infinity Gauntlet to wipe out half of all life in Avengers: Infinity War, was left depleted in the effort. Comparatively, Eson was shown using the Power Stone as just an aspect of his power, wiping out all life on entire worlds with a single motion. He appears no worse for wear from the effort in using the Stone, which destroyed many others for their use. The Power Stone coupled with Eson is shown being a world-breaker, suggesting the natural power of the Celestials dwarfs anything the likes of Thanos and Captain Marvel, who were themselves amplified by the Infinity Stones.

Thanos was stronger than any single Avenger, single-handedly fending off Thor, Hulk, and all but the Scarlet Witch and Captain Marvel with relative ease. But compared to Eson, he’s nothing. Even other powerful figures in Marvel’s cosmic cosmology could contend with the Celestial. The Watchers could potentially rival them in terms of sheer importance but typically, lack their sheer power. Likewise, the Living Tribunal — a cosmic force of justice — could likely match them, but he’s yet to appear in the MCU. What makes Eson all the scarier is his sheer alien nature. Even Thanos had emotional logic to his actions, but Eson’s work remains unexplained in its brutality.

It would have to take something truly epic to match the power of the Celestials, something akin to the devilish Mephisto, the reality-warping Beyonder or even a fellow cosmic-level powerhouse like Galactus. While the death of the Celestial that became Knowhere proves that the Celestials can be destroyed, there’s nothing that the heroes of the Marvel Universe have been shown exhibiting that could allow them to be anything but ants to the might of Eson. Reaching that level might be out of the question for the heroes of the Marvel Universe, making a possible return of the character and a resuming of his destructive work all the more harrowing of a possibility. If Eson is returning in The Eternals, then the heroes of the MCU had better prepare for their single most terrifying threat yet.
