The Simpsons is full of healthy and unhealthy relationships, here are five of each.

In over thirty years of putting out episodes, The Simpsons has created a lot of relationships. Technically, every single character has a relationship with every single other simply because there have been enough episodes to put every character in the same shot as every other at some point. However, there are obviously some characters with much stronger connections to others.
We’ve compared five of the relationships which were strange and only ended up hurting each member, to five who had wholesome and interesting connections.
10 Unhealthy: Sideshow Bob And Bart
Of course, any relationship centered around one half wanting to kill the other and the other wanting to not be killed is pretty hard to make wholesome. From the first time they met and Bart exposed Sideshow Bob’s plan to frame Krusty, Bob has attempted to seek revenge.
There was that one time when Bob couldn’t kill Bart as he’d grown accustomed to his face, but he changed his approach pretty soon after and went back to his attempted killings.
9 Wholesome: Lisa And Nelson
Nelson began his Simpsons life as a one dimension bully a bit like Jimbo and Kearney. Then all of a sudden he was friends with Bart every now and again, between stints of bullying. Then we unraveled a complex, emotional backstory and it seemed that Lisa was the one person in Springfield able to tame him and turn him into the nice guy he was capable of being.
8 Unhealthy: Sideshow Bob And Selma
We could basically list Sideshow Bob and anybody here, but the final person we’ll draw attention to in relation to Bob is Selma. They seemed like a happy couple, and even though he had tried to kill her nephew, Selma seemed happy to settle down with him.
As usual, Bob had more sinister plans in mind, and it was revealed that he was actually trying to kill her all along. Not a great basis for a relationship.
7 Wholesome: Seymour Skinner And Edna Krabappel
In the end, Edna and Seymour didn’t work out. She ended up marrying Ned Flanders, and when Marcia Wallace died, the character was killed. Tragic for both Ned and Seymour, though we never got to see the heartbreaking reaction of the latter. Their on and off affair might have been weird, but at the core of it, they understood each other.
6 Unhealthy: Bart And Lisa
Every now and again, we are exposed to a version of the Bart and Lisa relationship that paints them both quite positively.
However, a lot of the time, they’re just trying to ruin each other’s lives as much as possible. It’s typically Bart in the wrong, but Lisa has had her fair share of terrible moments as well.
5 Wholesome: Abe And Bea
If Abe and Bea weren’t already perfect for each other, their names match up perfectly. Cute. Grandpa Simpson isn’t often shown to be a charming and kind man, but in the few episodes where he has total control of his mental faculties, he meets Bea and the two have a very wholesome relationship.
4 Unhealthy: Mr. Burns And Mr. Smithers
On the one hand, Mr. Burns gets a lackie who will do whatever he wants, and Mr. Smithers gets to do the bidding of a man he idolizes.
However, when you take into account how obviously Smithers is in love with his boss (and how Burns surely knows), things turn into a bit more of a problematic abuse of power that has some pretty bad implications.
3 Wholesome: Ned And Maud
Maud was one of the first characters in The Simpsons to be fully and forever killed off. Maud Flanders was once upon a time a major character and was seen to be very much in love with her husband, and all of a sudden she was gone. The fact that Ned was so devoted to her even years after her death proved that they were one of the most real couples in the show.
2 Unhealthy: Homer And Marge
Homer and Marge are an incredibly complex pairing. There are so many times when we see a version of them that would never work.
They’ve basically broken up many times, Homer has repeatedly messed up and proven that he just doesn’t care about their relationship enough to put any effort in. He forgets their anniversaries, spends more time at Moe’s than with his wife, and he openly abuses their son.
1 Wholesome: Homer And Marge
Then, on the other hand, Homer and Marge are one of the loveliest pairings in television history. Various flashbacks have shown that they’ve only really ever had eyes for each other. The way Homer realizes what he has done every now and again and re-devotes himself to his wife; the way they would so obviously do anything for each other; the way they make each other laugh. It’s great, really.
