Warning! Spoilers for Transformers vs. The Terminator.
Transformers vs. the Terminator is a no-holds-barred battle of two beloved 80’s blockbusters. With both iconic franchises debuting in 1984, fans of each have long deliberated about whether the Autobots and Decepticons could overcome T-800s, or if the Cybertronians would ultimately be terminated. With the release of the final installment of IDW and Dark Horses’s four issue mini-series, the winner of the long-awaited robotic rampage is finally revealed. But, as is often the case with complicated crossover stories, this mechanical match-up is more than meets the eye.
Initially set in 2029, Transformers vs. the Terminator imagines a future where Skynet and the Decepticons wage a never-ending war for control of Earth, with the Autobots and humanity long eradicated. When the Terminators realize that they are fighting a losing battle, they send a fleshed-out T-800 back to 1984 to find Sarah Connor and destroy the Cybertronians before they can establish planetary dominance. Things become complicated, however, when the Decepticons learn of Skynet’s future resistance. Megatron and his minions attempt to destroy Skynet’s headquarters before the Terminators can become a threat. Sarah and the T-800 must join forces with Optimus Prime and his Autobots to preemptively prevent the Decepticons from overpowering humanity. Only by saving Skynet in 1984 can this unlikely union save the planet in 2029.
Transformers license holder IDW Publishing teamed up with Terminator licensee Dark Horse Comics to construct the latest entry in the Transformers comic book franchise. This action-packed time travel tour-de-force benefits from the return of long-time Transformers writer John Barber, editor David Mariotte, and artist Alex Milne. The story is compelling and incorporates plenty of easter eggs for die-hard fans of both franchises. The art is also a strength. Milne admirably replicates the various robots in intricate detail, and Sarah Connor even resembles Linda Hamilton. The T-800 could look a little more like Arnold, but minor gripes aside, the series is thoroughly enjoyable.
One of the intricacies of IDW and Dark Horse’s Transformers vs. the Terminator is that Milne never quite specifies which of the factions readers should be rooting for. If the Decepticons destroy the Autobots and the T-800, humanity is toast. If the Transformers help the Terminator destroy the Decepticons and preserve Skynet, Judgement Day is ushered in, and humanity is toast. Technically, the series ends with the latter scenario. The lone T-800 sacrifices himself to ensure an Autobot victory. Yet, this conflict is less about which race will come out on top and more about which one won’t. To steal the tagline from another monster-mashup series, “Whoever wins, we lose.”
