The Vampire Diaries Klaus Mikaelsons 5 Best Traits (& 5 Worst)

The CW’s iconic vampire TV series The Vampire Diaries was on air for eight long years, and in that time it comes as no surprise that the protagonists of the series faced off against too many villains and enemies to count. However, it’s safe to say that none of those villains ever compared to Klaus Mikaelson.

Klaus was built up before his arrival to be the biggest of big bads, and when he finally showed up in Mystic Falls, he did not disappoint. However, despite the fact that he was cruel and did many evil things, he was actually a very layered and complex character. So what were his best character traits, and what were his worst?

10 Best: Funny

Klaus may be cruel, sadistic, and utterly unhinged, but a huge reason why he was such an appealing villain is that on top of how terrifying he was, he was also pretty funny.

Klaus seems to be extremely brutal, but his jovial and droll attitude really lightens the mood when he’s getting his hands dirty. Despite his most repugnant qualities, he still had a great sense of humor.

9 Worst: Paranoid

Honestly, when it comes to feeling paranoid about people trying to destroy him or hurt him in some way, Klaus does have a tendency to be right more often than he’s wrong.

However, his fear and his constant obsession with his own safety doesn’t just cripple him as an individual, it causes all of the people around him to suffer, and it isolates the few people in the world that actually care about Klaus from him.

8 Best: Persevering

Regardless of the fact that most of Klaus’ goals revolve around torturing and/or killing many people, it’s hard not to admire the fact that once he sets his sights on an aim, he won’t stop until he achieves it.

Whether it’s spending a thousand years trying to break his hybrid curse or spending five hundred years trying to get revenge against Katherine, Klaus does not know how to give up.

7 Worst: Ruthless

Whenever Klaus is up against the ropes, he finds a way to come out the winner in any situation. He owes his perennial success to a lot of things, but one of the most obvious, simplest, and least appealing avenues that he uses to always get is way is just by being unfathomably ruthless.

He goes to extremes that no sane or remotely empathetic person would ever go to, and he uses cruelty to force people into submission.

6 Best: Romantic

Klaus was built up to be the most dangerous and frightening villain in the history of TVD’s supernatural world, and when he showed up he pretty much lived up to that reputation.

But once he met Caroline Forbes, the audience got to see a much different side to Klaus. He made a genuine effort to woo her, but more importantly, his attraction and love for her seemed to be very sincere.

5 Worst: Manipulative

Whether he’s trying to be awful or wonderful, Klaus can never approach any person or situation in a straightforward manner.

His plans and machinations are often very overly complex, because he wants to hide his true emotions or true intentions behind layers and layers of manipulation and misdirection. Klaus is undoubtedly an exceptional master manipulator, but it’s also undeniably one of his worst personality traits.

4 Best: Devoted

Although Klaus objectively treats his entire family terribly, it’s impossible to deny that he doesn’t love them dearly.

He’s utterly terrified at the thought of them leaving him or not loving him so he keeps them trapped, but he would still do anything for them, as he would do anything for anyone that he has genuine feelings for. Beneath his serial killer veneer is actually quite a loving person.

3 Worst: Self-Centered

Klaus is incredibly clever and a master manipulator, but he’s surprisingly easy for the Mystic Falls gang to outplay on many occasions.

But why is that? It’s not because he’s not smart enough or powerful enough, it actually seems to mostly stem from the fact that Klaus is so obsessed with himself that he doesn’t foresee very obvious and predictable turns of events. If he actually took the time to bother with other people, he’d be unstoppable.

2 Best: Intelligent

Being a hybrid certainly helped in terms of Klaus’ ability to survive, however it’s really his intellect that has led to his general success in surviving and acquiring more and more power over the centuries.

He’s excellent at seeing every angle of a potential situation and exploiting it to his advantage, and he was almost always one step ahead of the Mystic Falls gang.

1 Worst: Sadistic

Easily Klaus Mikaelson’s worst character quality is that not only does he hardly think twice about hurting people, but he actually likes doing it.

He lashes out when he’s upset, but he also comes up with insanely elaborate ways of psychologically and physically torturing people that he takes years to actually carry out. He rarely lets any slight against him go unpunished, and typically the punishments he relishes in far outweigh the “crimes” against him.
