The Walking Dead 5 Most Shameful Things Negan Did (& 5 He Should Be Proud Of)

First introduced as a power-hungry villain with a leather jacket and bad attitude, Negan has gone through many changes since his chilling introduction in The Walking Dead season 6 finale. Over the past four seasons, he has lost his followers, nearly died at the hands of Rick Grimes, and was imprisoned for years in Alexandria.

Finally earning his release by infiltrating the Whisperers and helping Alexandria to win the war, it seems that Negan is turning over a new leaf. It may be too soon to use the word “redemption”, but despite his years of shameful behavior, he has done quite a few things that he could be proud of as well.

10 Most Shameful: He Formed A Harem Of “Wives”

The Walking Dead 5 Most Shameful Things Negan Did (& 5 He Should Be Proud Of)

Negan has maimed, murdered, and manipulated countless victims during his years with the Saviors, but one of his most shameful acts was forming a harem of dubiously consenting “wives”. Negan talks a big talk about valuing consent and not harming women, but it is clear that none of them genuinely wanted to be with him.

He boasts about his physical relationships with them and acts as if they chose this, but the truth is that they are only with him either to save their own lives or the lives of their loved ones.

9 Should Be Proud Of: He Brought Carl Home Safely

The Walking Dead 5 Most Shameful Things Negan Did (& 5 He Should Be Proud Of)

Negan takes threats on his and his people’s lives very seriously, but he can’t help but be impressed and a little bit unnerved when Carl Grimes stows away on a truck to the Sanctuary with murder on his mind.

He could have easily made an example of him, but the truth is that Negan actually respects him for having the guts to actually try to kill him on his own turf. Amused, Negan shows him around the Sanctuary, and then drives him back home to Alexandria.

8 Most Shameful: He Cheated On Lucille

The Walking Dead 5 Most Shameful Things Negan Did (& 5 He Should Be Proud Of)

The Walking Dead season 10’s epic finale “Here’s Negan” gave fans never before seen insight into Negan’s marriage with his only true wife, Lucille. Seemingly stuck in a midlife crisis after being fired from his job as a gym teacher, Negan is shown as lazy, financially irresponsible, and unwilling to make a positive change in his life or his marriage.

Instead of working to make their situation better, he has an ongoing affair with his wife’s best friend, Janine, only ending things for good when he finds out that Lucille has cancer.

7 Should Be Proud Of: He Saved Sasha From Being Assaulted

The Walking Dead 5 Most Shameful Things Negan Did (& 5 He Should Be Proud Of)

Negan doesn’t have the most honorable history with women at the Sanctuary, but he draws a clear line of what is allowed in season 7’s “Something They Need”. Bound and alone, Sasha is visited by a Savior named David who violently attempts to assault her.

A furious Negan comes into the cell, and stabs him through the neck, deaf to David’s profuse apologies. Negan then says that he is sorry to Sasha, unties her, makes sure that she has new clothes, and offers her a chance to join him.

6 Most Shameful: He Ruled Over The Saviors With Fear

Negan may act like he’s a “stand up guy”, but many of his people are loyal to him out of fear of repercussions and a need for safety. Negan sees humans as a resource and does not kill when he doesn’t feel that he has to, but he has ensured that they won’t step out of line in other ways.

One of his favorite punishments is burning the faces of those that he feels have betrayed him, leaving them horrifically scarred but still able to work for their cause.

5 Should Be Proud Of: His Friendship With Judith

The Walking Dead 5 Most Shameful Things Negan Did (& 5 He Should Be Proud Of)

Negan is not always the most personable when it comes to adults, but he loves kids, and his growing bond with little Judith Grimes is one of the rare pure things about him.

The closest thing that he had to a friend during all of those years locked away in the Alexandria jail cell, he passed the time doling out life advice and helping her with her homework. Much like Carl, he respects her bravery, and in “The Storm” Negan doesn’t hesitate to rush into the freezing cold to save her life at the risk of his own.

4 Most Shameful: He Killed Glenn And Abraham

The Walking Dead 5 Most Shameful Things Negan Did (& 5 He Should Be Proud Of)

One of the most disgusting acts Negan has ever committed was the brutal murders of Glenn and Abraham. The attack isn’t entirely unwarranted from his point of view, but Negan made sure that his revenge for the lives of his men was as calculated and as cruel as possible.

Dragging out his punishment, Negan is practically jovial as he decides who his victims will be, going so far as to gleefully make fun of them as they die tragically in front of their friends and family.

3 Should Be Proud Of: He Saved Lydia’s Life

The Walking Dead 5 Most Shameful Things Negan Did (& 5 He Should Be Proud Of)

Lydia leaves the abuse of her mother with the Whisperers, but finds herself the source of mockery and bullying by a group of teenagers at her new home. Negan understands what it is like to be an outsider in Alexandria and attempts to take her under his wing, offering her advice.

Refusing to forget where she came from, the bullying goes too far and Lydia is nearly killed. Negan jumps into action and saves her life, accidentally killing one of the teenagers in the process.

2 Most Shameful: He Mentally Tortured Rick

The Walking Dead 5 Most Shameful Things Negan Did (& 5 He Should Be Proud Of)

Moments after viciously slaying Glenn and Abraham, Negan decides that he isn’t done yet. Leaving everybody knelt in the cold next to the bodies of their friends, he drags Rick away and takes him on a trip.

Determined to break him, Negan mentally tortures Rick for hours, forcing him to go out in the midst of a hoard of Walkers, and threatening the people that he loves most. Upon his return, he orders Rick to chop off Carl’s arm, only stopping him from doing so at the very last moment, pleased that Rick is now fully under his control.

1 Should Be Proud Of: He Infiltrated The Whisperers

After years of imprisonment, Negan finally gets the chance to earn his way out and perhaps even find a place in the Alexandrian community. Striking a deal with Carol, he infiltrates the Whisperers, earning the respect and trust of their leader, Alpha.

Despite killing Alpha, the Whisperers dub him their leader. Rather than assume the throne and turn the Whisperers into his new Saviors, Negan proves his loyalty to Alexandria by refusing, saving Daryl’s life, and helping Alexandria win the war against the rest of the Whisperers.
