AMC’s The Walking Dead has introduced a huge ensemble cast of unique characters over the past ten seasons since its momentous premiere, but few have come close to the massive popularity of Daryl Dixon. A quiet man of few words with a complex history, he has become known for iconic symbols such as his motorcycle and his crossbow, but what else is there to the great Daryl Dixon?

Not originally featured in the comic series, the writers have done an incredible job with the beloved but standoffish hunter. Watching him evolve from a hot-headed loner to the brave-hearted protector that he is today has only endeared him to fans more and more with each new episode.

10 Daryl Dixon Is Played By Norman Reedus

Norman Reedus is 52 years old and has been acting professionally since the 1990s. The Boondock Saints actor knew that he wanted to be a part of The Walking Dead from the moment that he read the script. There was only one problem – Daryl wasn’t written into the original script!

When Reedus first auditioned for a part on the show, it was actually for the role of Merle. The powers that be enjoyed his performance so much that they ended up writing a brand-new character into the show specifically for Reedus, and that is how fan-favorite Daryl Dixon came to be.

9 Age: Daryl Is Likely In His Late 40’s

In a dystopian world where the dead walk and other humans can’t always be trusted, it’s no wonder that there isn’t a lot of attention given to petty things such as ages and birthdays.

Though Daryl’s age has never been specified, the first season aired when Norman Reedus was 41 years old, and it is likely that the character was meant to be around the same age. Between the natural progression of time, as well as the time jumps, Daryl is probably now in his late 40’s, or at most, his early 50’s like Reedus himself.

8 Height: 5-Foot-10 Inches Tall

Similarly to his age, Daryl’s height has not been spoken outright, but it is reasonable to assume that it matches up with the actor that plays him. Norman Reedus stands at 5 foot 10 inches tall. This is the same height as previous co-stars of the series, Michael Rooker and Andrew Lincoln.

Thus far, the tallest recurring member of the series has been Ryan Hurst, who stands at just over 6 foot 4 inches tall.

7 Zodiac Sign: Aries

Daryl’s exact birth month is unknown, but fans don’t need to know the date to realize that the broody hunter is a textbook Aries. Bold personalities that are quick-tempered and led by their emotions, Aries-born bravely bound into conflict, even if it puts them at risk.

Naturally assertive and with their own ideas of how things should be done, they are drawn to leadership, whether they lead, or stick close by the other leaders. Courageous, determined, and passionate, Daryl exemplifies both of the best and worst traits of an Aries.

6 Motorcycle Type: Custom-Made

Daryl is known for his shaggy hair, his gruff exterior, and his heart of gold, but one of his most iconic symbols is his motorcycle. Previously meant to be a horseback rider, Reedus managed to convince the showrunners to give Daryl a bike. Originally, he rode his brother Merle’s motorcycle, but after losing it, he needed a replacement.

According to ClassifiedMoto, Daryl’s motorcycle started out with the base of a 1992 Honda CB750 Nighthawk. The front, one of the tires, and the brakes were from a Yamaha YZF-R6, and finally, it was given a new battery, a custom-made exhaust, a new leather seat, and a special rack for his crossbow.

5 Crossbow Type: Horton Scout HD 125

Daryl’s crossbow is a character of its own. It just doesn’t feel right when anybody except for Daryl is holding it. Making its debut in “Tell It To The Frogs”, precise, deadly, and very nearly silent, the crossbow is an excellent weapon for taking unsuspecting Walkers or other enemies by surprise.

The original model used is a Horton Scout HD 125, but after it is lost, Daryl can be seen using a Stryker StrykeZone 380. Considerably more powerful and ideal for long-range shots than the Horton Scout, Daryl has continued to use this weapon since season 3.

4 Daryl’s Family History

Riddled with abuse and a distinct lack of love, Daryl had a rough life growing up. His father was a physically abusive alcoholic, and his mother was neglectful. She died in an accidental fire when she fell asleep in bed with a lit cigarette.

Daryl once got lost in the woods as a child, forced to survive on berries for nine days before he found his way home. No one in his family had even noticed that he was gone. His older brother, Merle, was racist, sexist, and mean. He claimed to care for his baby brother, but was heavily involved in criminal activity that landed him in juvie from a young age.

3 Daryl’s Closest Friendships

Though Daryl does not easily form strong relationships, the ones that he has are there until the end. Starting out temperamental, aggressive, and only truly loyal to Merle, their separation is one of the best things that could have happened to Daryl. He genuinely grows as a person as he forges new bonds with Rick, Carol, Michonne, and later Connie.

One of his most endearing qualities is his easy and protective relationships with kids. Due to his rough upbringing, he is always there to protect them, whether he knows them or not. He has a deep, nearly parental bond with Judith, and becomes close with Lydia after she leaves abuse at the hands of The Whisperers.

2 Daryl’s Relationship Status

Many fans have been eager to see romance bloom from the enduring bond shared between Daryl and Carol, but The Walking Dead threw a curveball in “Find Me” with a surprising introduction. Played by Lynn Collins, Leah is a hardened survivor used to living on her own, and the only confirmed love interest that Daryl has had in ten seasons on the show.

Collins claims that for Leah, it was real love. “I’m going to go out on a limb and say that Leah for sure fell in love with him. If it wasn’t the apocalypse, would these two be a match? Who knows.” Though some Caryl fans were disappointed, others believe that the lack of intimacy shown on-screen implies that those moments are being saved to finally happen between Daryl and Carol later in the series.

1 Kill Count: 55

It can be tough to keep track of kill counts when it comes to a show like The Walking Dead. According to a list in The Walking Dead Wiki, Daryl has 55 confirmed direct kills that do not include Walkers or already zombified victims that he has to put down (such as his brother, Merle).

Among his count are at least 25 of the Saviors, 8 of the Whisperers, and Morales. Gregory’s death can also be attributed to Daryl’s doing. Though Maggie made the call, Daryl is the one that smacked the horse the man was sitting, leaving Gregory to dangle beneath the gallows at his Hilltop execution.
