The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red reflected on its rocky road to fame, relating one instance when it was actually kicked out of Blizzard’s booth at E3. CD Projekt may be one of the most well-known names in the industry now, but it wasn’t always that way. The team reflected back on its upbringing and noted that prior to the release of The Witcher, it had to get crafty with marketing the game, which resulted in upsetting some other big names in the industry.

CD Projekt Red started out as a small Polish team that has since grown tremendously to be one of the most prominent developers in the world. The company has already sold over 30 million copies of The Witcher 3 since releasing the game in 2015, something most games never come close to achieving, and this standout RPG marked the point when the world started to fully recognize and appreciate the developer on a large scale. That said, CD Projekt Red had a rather rocky start.

At WitcherCon, some members of the team from CD Projekt Red reflected on their time at one of their first E3 events. They had a tiny “booth” which was essentially just a chair and a computer and apparently, went to Blizzard’s booth to hand out posters, but were quickly chased out by security for their schemes. Now, CD Projekt Red has reached the peak of gaming fame, even opening The Witcher developer up to cyberattacks following the poor reception of the studio’s latest project, Cyberpunk 2077.

It’s clear that the company has come a long way from its grass roots beginnings, managing to sell millions of copies of its games, attract star power like Keanu Reeves, and take center stage at Microsoft’s E3 conferences. In 2019, the developer had a massive E3 booth and press area with drinks, cosplayers, and immersive sets. It’s a far cry from the studio’s first E3 with The Witcher. Although the studio’s image has been a bit tainted following the release of the very controversial Cyberpunk 2077, it’s hard to imagine its next full game won’t be yet another major industry talking point.

As of right now, the next release from the studio is a remaster of The Witcher 3 slated for later this year. It’s expected to include a variety of new upgrades and content, including DLC items inspired by the Netflix TV series. The fact that the franchise has a Netflix series from which to pull items like that proves that CD Projekt Red is in a very good place with the franchise that brought it such fame and success. The company likely won’t have to use guerrilla tactics to push posters for its next game at the booths of other developers. CDPR is believed to be working on another entry in The Witcher series, but it’s unclear what shape it will take.
