Titans Remembers The Most Important Part Of Dick Graysons Batman Relationship

Titans season 3 remembers a vital aspect of Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson’s father-son relationship that often gets ignored. The tragic tale of how Dick Grayson became Robin is the most famous sidekick origin in comic book history. Already parading around as Batman by this point, Bruce Wayne watches the Flying Graysons perform at Haly’s Circus, and his awe turns to terror as the family fall to their deaths following an act of criminal sabotage. Only the young Dick Grayson is left unharmed, and recalling his own childhood, Bruce steps in to offer the orphan a home… which naturally means slapping a mask on the kid and going out in the middle of the night to punch criminals.

Titans and DC comic lore both portray Batman as a father figure to Dick Grayson – one that follows Robin even into his adult life as Nightwing. At times, their relationship is difficult but, like many father-son duos, any squabbles pale in comparison to the love they share, with Dick striving to impress Bruce, and Bruce proud of the man Dick becomes… even if he doesn’t always say it. In Titans, Bruce and Dick’s relationship is even more strained than the comics, and especially in season 3, when Batman murders Joker, immediately starts recruiting a new Robin after Jason Todd dies, and then disappears from Gotham entirely. In Titans season 3’s “Prodigal,” however, the audience is reminded of the most important (albeit often forgotten) part of Dick and Bruce’s father-son connection – Dick Grayson already had a father.

“Prodigal” sees Dick Grayson thrown into a Lazarus pit after suffering fatal wounds at the hands of Random Bystander #4. While the mystic goop heals his wounds, Dick’s mind confronts a lifetime of unresolved trauma – jealousy over Jason Todd taking his place, mistakes made as the leader of the Titans, and sure enough, the pressure of having Batman as an adopted father. As Dick’s psyche races through the troubled memories, a revelation dawns upon him – Bruce Wayne isn’t the father he needs to seek approval from; John Grayson is. Coming to this realization, Dick shares a dream-like conversation with his real dad, and then surfaces from the Lazarus pit resurrected.

John Grayson is not an important character in the wider fabric of DC mythology. Though New 52 continuity would later add a minor connection to the Court of Owls, John Grayson’s sole purpose is having a son, then dying so Dick can join up with Bruce and become Robin. Very little of John’s time as a father is shown (compared to scenes between Dick and Bruce, at least), so it’s only natural that Batman usually gets portrayed as the chief father figure. Bruce’s role was hugely formative for young Dick Grayson, not just by steering him toward vigilantism, but by being there during a routinely difficult period of adolescence.

But Batman stories often overlook how Dick Grayson was around 8-years-old when his parents fell to their deaths – easily old enough to remember John and Mary’s own values and teachings, as well as their approach to parenting. Just as Bruce regularly remembers the lessons handed down by Thomas Wayne, Dick should be remembering John Grayson the same way. For story purposes, it makes sense to sideline John and focus on Batman as the father figure but, in reality, the Graysons should be more prominent in Dick’s thoughts than they are. Titans season 3 gives a rare acknowledgement of this curious Robin trope, reminding viewers (and Dick Grayson himself, apparently), that Batman was never the only dad in his life.
