T’Nia Miller Responds to Doctor Who Season 14 Fan Casting Rumors

T’Nia Miller has addressed the rumors that she will be playing the Doctor in Doctor Who season 14. The BBC science fiction series is currently airing its thirteenth season, a truncated set of six episodes titled Doctor Who: Flux that began airing on October 31. The series is poised for a major shakeup next season, when original reboot showrunner Russell T. Davies will be returning to the series, replacing current showrunner Chris Chibnall. The current Doctor Jodie Whitaker will also be exiting the series, meaning that the character must regenerate into a new form. Although Whitaker has filmed her regeneration, she still doesn’t know who will be replacing her in Doctor Who.

Rumors have been swirling that the role may be taken up by T’Nia Miller. The actress has previously worked with Russell T. Davies twice, on his series Years and Years and the linked series Cucumber and Banana. She is probably best known in the States for her role in the Mike Flanagan Netflix horror series The Haunting of Bly Manor, but she has also made appearances on Foundation and Sex Education. She actually has already appeared on an episode of Doctor Who in 2015, playing an unnamed female general.

Speaking with Screen Rant, Miller confirmed that she “might be” interested in playing the part and that “it would be fun.” She warmed up to the idea rather quickly, remembering that Russell T. Davies would be rejoining the series this season. She said she should “give [him] a call actually,” and said that even if he offered just a one-line part she would happily take it. I might be [interested], I very much might be. I mean, Russell T. Davies, and I’ve got to give Russell a call actually, Russell’s come back, hasn’t he? And if Russell said to me, “T’Nia, come and do one line,” I’d be like, “Alright Russell,” so… Wouldn’t that be fun? To be the Doctor? It would be fun.

The nature of the regeneration of the Doctor this season is still shrouded in mystery, considering that only the first episode of Doctor Who: Flux has aired so far. Presumably the emergence of the unknowable new threat known as the Flux will be handled by Whitaker’s Doctor, leaving the next Doctor free to defend the universe from some new antagonist. However, this season may be setting up storylines and characters that will carry on to the next season and whoever the Doctor will be then.

Although Miller has clearly expressed willingness to play the role, it’s clear nobody has actually approached her to offer it yet. However, with interest increasing in having a Doctor Who that expresses more of the diversity of the human experience, including former Doctor Colin Baker calling for a non-white Doctor, Miller would certainly be a good choice. She certainly has proven herself to have the dramatic chops to face the more challenging aspects of the role.
