Topher Grace Answers SpiderMan Return Question With Fake No Way Home Spoilers

Topher Grace responds to a question about his being in Spider-Man: No Way Home with some very funny fake spoilers. Grace made his one and only appearance in a Marvel movie when he played Venom in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3.

Grace’s portrayal of Venom in the Raimi film would of course be entirely overshadowed when Tom Hardy took on the role of Eddie Brock in 2018’s Venom standalone film. Now with Venom 2 about to arrive, rumors are heating up about an imminent cross-over between Sony’s Spider-Man Universe and the MCU, with Venom and Peter Parker finally squaring off. Indeed there has been a ton of speculation about Venom arriving in the MCU in the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home, a movie that is already confirmed to feature an array of multiverse Spider-Man characters, including Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock, Jamie Foxx’s Electro and Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, not to mention MCU character Doctor Strange.

It clearly isn’t enough for fans that those three fabled cinematic Spider-Man adversaries plus Doctor Strange are all headed to the screen in No Way Home, because when Spider-Man 3 Venom actor Grace did a Reddit AMA via his IamTopherGrace account to promote his show Home Economics, he was immediately hit with questions about his own possible participation in the new Spider-Man film. Rather than bat aside the questions with a standard no-comment, Grace went the humorous route and whipped up some spoilers that are obviously fake but still fun. Grace said:

Please keep it between us but yes, I am in it. The plot starts with Peter Parker (Tom Holland) bummed that everyone knows his identity and then some crazy s–t happens with Dr. Strange and Dr. Octopus (Alfred Molina) comes into his dimension. Then Electro and the Green Goblin hop out of one of those ‘energy circles’ and they’re like “It’s spider stompin time”. Then Tom Hardy and I pop out and battle each other and I win (obvi), it’s like not even a fight I just kick his ass immediately. Not to give too much away but there are also some actors from the original 70s Spiderman show, Aquaman and Batman (Affleck, not Keaton) crossover, and thanks to Disney Han Solo’s ghost from Rise of Skywalker, and that Eve robot from Wall-E. Again, please keep between us.

Clearly Grace has been paying attention to all the rumors about No Way Home as he’s obviously playing off of the array of characters already confirmed for the movie. Of course Grace’s jokes do not by themselves constitute confirmation that he is not in the movie himself, but only demonstrate his unwillingness to directly answer questions about his participation. It’s still entirely possible that Grace is in the movie and is just being evasive because he doesn’t want to incur the wrath of Marvel and Kevin Feige. Indeed given the multiverse developments already teased for No Way Home, the door seems open for just about anything to happen in the movie, including the arrival of the Spider-Man 3 version of Venom.

Of course a showdown between the two different cinematic versions of Venom would be amazing and hilarious. But such a square-off is probably a little too silly for the MCU, which of course embraces humor but largely avoids outright self-parody. Sadly fans who wish to see Grace and Hardy throw down on-screen will likely remain disappointed forever. However, a Hardy vs. Holland showdown seems more and more inevitable given the way things are developing with Venom 2. Even if Venom and Spider-Man don’t face-off in Spider-Man: No Way Home, they probably will do so somewhere down the road.
