Transformers Grimlock is Destined for Epic Fight With a Dragon

Warning: contains spoilers for Transformers: King Grimlock #1

Grimlock, the overly violent leader of a group of Transformers known as the Dinobots, has been transported into a medieval-like world under the hellish dominion of the Golden One, a powerful sorcerer that can transform into a mighty dragon. Called Transformers: King Grimlock, the series is a continuation of a storyline from the original 1980s cartoon where the Golden One is actually the savior of the very world he’s now terrorizing with an iron (or golden) fist.

How the T-Rex Transformer comes to dwell in the land of Menonia is actually an accident in Transformers: King Grimlock #1 by writer Steve Orlando, artist Agustin Padilla and colorist Jeremy Colwell. The indigenous people had originally planned on stopping the Golden One’s evil reign by summoning Optimus Prime, whose heroic exploits against the Decepticons are clearly legendary enough to transcend dimensions. At first, Grimlock’s summoners are more than fine with their seemingly serendipitous mistake, for the overly barbaric and unrestrained methodologies that Grimlock happily employs when slaying his foes are immediately put on display when confronted by a horde of attacking Leodon beasts.

But the people of Menonia foolishly mention to their robotic savior that their first choice had initially been Optimus Prime, causing the Dinobot leader to refuse their pleas for help, despite showing an earlier interest in the prospect of “bash[ing] Golden brains.” Before being accidentally teleported across dimensions, Grimlock had been engaged in a contentious argument with the Autobot leader as they stood amongst the ruins of their recently vanquished foe, a group of cannibalistic robots called Meccanibals. Optimus wanted the cannibalistic Transformers to stand trial for their misdeeds while Grimlock believed they should be torn asunder to prevent a further uprising, a heated exchange that resulted in Optimus gaining the upper hand, much to the discontent of Grimlock.

Although Optimus Prime would have immediately come to the Menonians’ aide had he been correctly summoned, the story will undoubtedly benefit more so with Grimlock serving as the series’ main protagonist. Unlike Optimus whose cool and level-headedness can put readers to sleep when not neutralized by a more hotheaded counterpart, Grimlock is unrestrained in his mannerisms and relentless against his enemies, acting more like the more compelling Decepticons than the Autobots. His caveman-like speech also adds to his overall appeal and the violent, two-dimensional way of thinking he obviously espouses.

Although a continuation of an episode from the 1980s cartoon, Transformers: King Grimlock retcons the original story in a substantial way that only better serves the series as a whole. This shouldn’t be Grimlock’s first venture to Menonia despite what this series suggests. The Dinobot leader originally transported himself to Menonia (by accident no less) in the cartoon and eventually helped free the Golden One to take down the evil Red Wizard. But it’s clear by the Dinobot and Menonians’ actions in King Grimlock that this is the Transformer’s first time in Menonia. Although a substantial shift, this deviation actually serves to better the plot. If Grimlock had saved their people from the Red Wizard in this continuity then he’d have obviously been their first choice. There would have therefore been no confusion (unless Optimus was accidentally summoned) and Grimlock wouldn’t have become angered that he wasn’t their first choice. Their mistake in this series is what creates a compelling source of conflict that effectively complements Grimlock’s earlier frustration with Optimus. Here, Grimlock can truly be king, and yet, his pride is so strong that he actually rejects an offer that would have allowed him to cause mayhem and destruction with no limitations. Oh, and what’s better than a robotic T-Rex fighting a dragon?
