Twin Peaks The Return Richard And Linda Explained

Here’s Richard and Linda from Twin Peaks: The Return’s final episode explained – so much as they can be, anyway. The first season of Twin Peaks is considered one of the most groundbreaking shows to arrive on TV, but after it was canceled during its second season and David Lynch’s dark prequel Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me failed at the box-office, the franchise was considered dead. Lynch himself once stated he would never return to Twin Peaks in an early 2000s interview.

He broke that vow with 2017’s Twin Peaks: The Return, where he directed and co-wrote all eighteen episodes. Fans hoping for a straight-forward, nostalgic return have clearly never seen a David Lynch movie, however. The series instead delighted and baffled audiences in equal measure, and seemed to be a meta-commentary on both the original show and television in general. It also featured some fascinating sequences and characters, in addition to taking delight in teasing viewers with small nods to the original show.

One thing that doomed Twin Peaks during its second season was the network forcing Lynch to reveal who Laura’s killer was. With its core mystery solved it floundered with silly plotlines and ratings dipped dramatically. The show was never one for providing tidy or neat conclusions, which is something Twin Peaks: The Return underlined. The revival was littered with storylines and characters that aren’t resolved or left ambiguous, with Audrey Horne being the prime example. Another big question mark audiences are left with by the end of the revival is who exactly are Richard and Linda?

For context, toward the end of Twin Peaks: The Return’s both Cooper’s doppelganger and BOB have been destroyed, and Cooper tried to prevent Laura’s murder by going back to the night she died, but she disappeared as he led her away. He and Diane (Laura Dern) then drive to a specific point on a long road given to them by the Fireman and they seemingly cross over to another reality, though Cooper warns things might be different on the other side. Their personalities appear quite different once they do, with Cooper becoming more stern and humorless and they check into a motel. That night they have sex, though Diane becomes upset and covers Cooper’s face during the act.

Diane is gone the next morning, with Cooper discovering a note left to “Richard” from “Linda,” saying their relationship is over and he shouldn’t try to find her. This implies that by crossing over Cooper has become Richard and Diane became Linda, and the exterior of the motel is completely different when Cooper leaves. Twin Peaks: The Return keeps dialing up the surrealness, with “Richard” finding Laura Palmer is now called “Carrie Page” and has no memory of her previous life. He takes her back to her old house, which is not owned by her mother Sarah but a stranger.

While the series never explicitly states what’s happening, it appears that by saving Laura Palmer from her fate in the original show, Cooper has changed things forever by the end of Twin Peaks: The Return. He’s also seemingly crossed over into the “real-world,” with the owner of Sarah Palmer’s house actually played by its current real owner. Cooper’s attempt to continue the show after the mystery has wrapped up has created a warped, uncanny version of Twin Peaks that only seems vaguely similiar to what it once was. That’s only one way to read it though, and Lynch no doubt wants fans to make up their own minds.
