Though Jax and Brittany have had a tumultuous relationship on Bravo’s Vanderpump Rules, some times it seems more redeemable than others.

For fans of reality television, Vanderpump Rules is one of the best shows around. While it might not be as well-known as other series like The Bachelor, it has delivered some of the wildest scenes and dramatic moments of any reality show.

One of the most controversial characters in the series is Jax Taylor, and his relationship with now-wife Brittany Cartwright has been a dramatic one. There are many things about their relationship that are truly toxic as well as a few things that show they are actually good for one another.

10 Horrible: Brittany seemed to leverage Jax cheating on her to get the wedding of her dreams

After season six where it was revealed that Jax cheated on Brittany with Faith, it seemed apparent that Brittany was trying to use this to get her dream wedding.

Their wedding seemed to be something that she wanted much more than he did, and they never seemed to actually resolve the issues with cheating. It’s clear that Jax doesn’t protest much about the wedding and the cost because it’s almost like he has to go along with it in penance.

9 Redeemable: Brittany isn’t afraid to stick up for herself anymore

While Jax has treated Brittany pretty horribly over the years of their relationship, one positive is that Brittany has gotten more power in the relationship. She clearly isn’t willing to put up with as much from Jax anymore.

While she’s a sweet person overall, seeing her stick up for herself and stand her ground is refreshing. Jax can be way too overbearing, so it’s good to see their relationship have a more balanced power dynamic.

8 Horrible: They refuse to really work through their issues in a long-lasting way

In season seven of Vanderpump Rules, Jax and Brittany are seen going to a couple’s therapy together. These moments are very revealing into the fact that their relationship still isn’t great.

Even though they act like they’ve dealt with their issues and the fact Jax cheated, it seems more like they’ve just swept things under the rug. Jax shows that he still has anger issues and Britany doesn’t feel like she can share her true feelings with him.

7 Redeemable: Jax at least seems less volatile than before

When it comes to Jax Taylor, it’s hard to find a lot of redeeming qualities about him. Ever since his father died, he has been showing a narrative that he has changed for good.

While losing a loved one like that can greatly impact someone, it’s hard to believe that he’s now a completely good and honest person. However, he does seem to at least have softened a little and to be more aware of some of the important things in life.

6 Horrible: He has openly admitted, even to her family, that he thinks that he should always be #1

One of the most eye-opening scenes in the lead-up to Jax and Brittany’s engagement party in season seven is when Jax went out to eat with Brittany’s dad and brothers.

Brittany’s dad had some legitimate concerns about Jax and asked him if he was going to put Brittany first now. Instead of just saying that he would always look out for her, Jax just kept talking about how he was always going to look out for himself. The entire thing came off really selfish and shows his real priorities.

5 Redeemable: Brittany is clearly getting things she wants out of the relationship, too

While it’s easy to see that Jax has a lot of flaws and hasn’t treated Brittany well, it’s not as if she hasn’t gotten anything out of this relationship. She clearly wants to be married and wants to have the lifestyle that comes along with the reality stardom that Jax has, and dating him has led her to become a star in her own right.

She also does seem to love Jax and seems to want this path for her life.

4 Horrible: Jax expects Brittany to take care of him and can be really sexist

Jax is someone who has rather outdated views on gender roles, and even Brittany who seems to come from a more conservative Southern background doesn’t appreciate it at times.

Jax clearly has pretty sexist expectations of who does what in the relationship. He used to ask Brittany to make him sandwiches all the time and seemed to feel she owes this to him because he worked. But, this didn’t even make logical sense as Brittany was also working just as hard at the time.

3 Redeemable: Jax has so far not cheated on Brittany again

Losing his father does seem to have made at least some impact on him, and he seems like he’s at least trying to be more devoted to Brittany. Given Jax’s track record over the years it can be hard to buy into, but hopefully, this lasts and he remains faithful.

2 Horrible: Jax often fat shames Brittany and puts her down

Through much of season five, and even more so on Jax and Brittany Take Kentucky, Jax continually puts Brittany down. He outright tells her grandma that Brittany has gained weight ignoring the fact that he also has since they met. Brittany is a conventionally attractive person who isn’t even overweight, so seeing him body shame her was rough.

He also kept talking about how she “lost her spark” and was rather mean about it, and this isn’t how anyone should speak to their partner.

1 Horrible: Jax cheated on her and then broke up with her

Nothing will ever be worse or more toxic in their relationship than the time that Jax cheated on Brittany with Faith and then lied about it. Then, on top of everything, he was still pretty mean to her even after he was the one to mess up. Even though she stayed with him to try to make it work, he was the one who broke up with her only to immediately regret it.

Everything he did in that time period was disgusting, and it’s hard to imagine how a relationship can ever truly heal from that.
