On Vikings, Floki had a special connection with Norse Mythology gods. Like the Seer, he had visions from them from time to time. Fans thus expected him to always do the right thing, however, this wasn’t always the case. Floki made some decisions that were either bewildering or shocking throughout the show.

Floki did a thing or two out of spite but he was no villain, so he had no evil intent while doing most of the things he did. He strongly believed he was doing what was right by Odin. However, his choices didn’t sit well with fans because they had negative effects on either Floki himself or the people around him.

7 He Killed Athelstan

Loki detested the Anglo-Saxon monk Athelstan from the moment Raganr took him as a slave from the Lindisfarne Monastery. The skilled boatbuilder felt that all Christians deserved to die. When he had a vague vision from the gods, telling him that blood must be split, he interpreted is the green light to kill Athelstan so he did so.

The manner in which Floki killed Athelstan was brutal and disrespectful since he did it while the monk was praying. It was also an unwise decision from him since it put a dent in his relationship with Ragnar, a man who had always held him in high regard. Loki’s actions also directly impacted his own ambitions. As part of his revenge. Ragnar sabotaged his strategic attack during the Paris raid, causing him to lose confidence in his abilities as a warrior.

6 He Tried To Colonize Iceland

Among the 11 countries, the main character visited was Iceland. However, Floki’s decision to colonize the land brought more harm than good. Settlers turned on each other and disrespected him. Floki also died too after entering an erupting volcano.

The move underscored Floki’s obsession with the Norse gods. The only reason he was keen on going to Iceland is that he believed it was Asgard. Floki’s lack of intelligence was evident here because there was no way Asgard would ever be on Earth. His insistence on settling in Iceland also destabilized Kattegat as he had left with many capable warriors.

5 He Allowed Himself To Be Used By King Horik

After bonding with King Horik over their interest in Norse Mythology, Floki began ignoring Ragnar. He invited Horik to his wedding but snubbed Ragnar. He also joined Horik’s group when the Viking fleet left for Wessex. Upon realizing how much Floki adored him, Horik began using him to tear down Ragnar’s empire, even suggesting that he should kill the man.

Floki’s team-up with the King of Denmark was one of the Vikings friendships nobody saw coming. As a Ragnar loyalist, Floki was stopping low by becoming buddies with someone whose ambitions clashed with those of a friend he’d known since childhood. This particular Floki decision was also hard to stand because it was his religion that was making him blind once again. He believed Horik was genuine because he worshiped Odin, but the king was as dishonorable as men like Rollo.

4 He Abandoned His Family

Floki named his daughter Angrboda, after the first wife of Loki. Helga found this to be very disrespectful because Loki is considered one of the evil gods. Floki also stayed away from Helga and the child. On most occasions, it was Helga who always came to see him wherever he was.

Family was important to the Vikings, hence it was baffling for Floki to abandon his own yet he was a firm believer in traditions. Helga had been nothing but a good wife to Floki so his decision to stay away from her made him appear selfish.

3 He Wanted To Sacrifice Himself

One of the most shocking things Ragnar ever did was selecting his friend Athelstan as a sacrifice to the gods during the traditional pilgrimage to Uppsala. Luckily, the Norse priest disqualified Athelstan because he was Christian. Floki was keen on offering himself as an alternative sacrifice but Helga stopped him.

If Floki had been sacrificed, the Viking raiders would have been in trouble since he was their only reliable boat builder. No one else had the same skills that he had and he knew it. It was selfish of him to prioritize his own desire to go to Valhalla over the raids that would have benefited Kattegat as a whole.

2 He Tutored Ivar

Ivar’s rise to power was one of the best storylines on the show and Floki was a big part of it. Floki became so close to Ivar that Ragnar’s bloodthirsty son considered him a father figure. While everyone else was careful not to plant ideas in Ivar’s head, Floki was more than glad to do so.

It can be argued that Floki had no idea he was empowering a future tyrant, but it remains a fact that, were it not for him, Ivar wouldn’t have risen to the heights he did. Apart from his fighting skills and impressive strategies on the battlefield, there was little to love about Ivar. Much harm would have been prevented if Ivar never had a mentor.

1 His Hypocritical Moment In Spain

Floki’s biggest hypocritical moment came when he found worshippers inside a mosque in Algeciras. Harald was ready to slay them but Floki, who was intrigued by them ordered him to spare them.

While it was an admirable thing for Floki to do, it went against everything he stood for. Floki believed that the Norse gods were the only true goods. For this reason, he had participated in the massacres of hundreds of Christians throughout the show. It was unlike him to suddenly become sympathetic towards worshippers that didn’t believe in Odin.
