Walking Deads Magna Twist Was Teased In Season 9

The Walking Dead just dropped a reveal about Magna (Nadia Hiker) and Yumiko (Eleanor Matsuura), but this twist was setup shortly after the characters were introduced in season 9. Magna and Yumiko are part of a new group of survivors who joined the series after the six-year time jump in season 9 of the AMC series. Magna, Yumiko, Luke (Dan Fogler), Connie (Lauren Ridloff), and Kelly (Angel Theory) all came to Alexandria looking for a new home in season 9, and were sent to the Hilltop. They’ve been contributing to the community ever since.

In The Walking Dead season 10, episode 4, titled “Silence the Whisperers”, the show breaks away from the growing conflict with the Whisperers to focus on other problems faced by the residents of Hilltop and Alexandria. A deeply troubled Ezekiel (Khary Payton) shares a moment with Michonne (Danai Gurira) after contemplating suicide, Lydia (Cassady McClincy) is bullied by Alexandrians, Siddiq (Avi Nash) struggles with his PTSD, and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is mysteriously released after accidentally killing one of the people who was hurting Lydia.

Another storyline that unfolded in this week’s The Walking Dead involves Magna and Yumiko, who have an argument after people are injured in an accident that may have been caused by the Whisperers. Yumiko handles the situation quickly and ignores Magna’s suggestions, leading Magna to confront Yumiko about her take-charge attitude. Magna angrily remarks to Yumiko, “you’re not my lawyer anymore”. This aspect of their relationship has never been mentioned before, but Magna’s past was teased as far back as their second episode on the show.

In the season 9 episode, “Who Are You Now?”, Magna’s group was questioned by the Alexandria council to see if they could remain with the community. They were turned down after Michonne noticed Magna’s prison tattoo, and Magna refused to offer an explanation. So it would seem that Magna — who has already been revealed to be a truck stop waitress prior to the zombie apocalypse — committed some sort of serious crime, and was defended in court by her attorney, Yumiko. Presumably, the case was lost and Magna was sent in prison. At some point, the two began a romantic relationship.

This means that Magna and Yumiko are among the few characters on The Walking Dead who have a history that goes back to before the apocalypse. Not much else is known about them, but later episodes could shed more light on what happened, and perhaps reveal what it was that put Magna in prison.
