WandaVision May Have Just Hinted at Pietros TRUE Intentions

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for WandaVision Episode 6, “All-New Halloween Spooktacular!,” now streaming on Disney+.

Since Pietro Maximoff mysteriously reappeared in Westview at the end of WandVision’s fifth episode, fans have been analyzing all options to explain the revival of a character who died in Avengers: Age of Ultron. The fact that he was played by X-Men Quicksilver actor Evan Peters only further complicated things, raising questions about whether this is the start of the MCU’s multiverse. However, a conversation in WandaVision’s latest episode, “All-New Halloween Spooktacular!,” might offer a third option.

For most of Episode 6, Pietro comes across as a goofy, slacker-type sitcom uncle who regularly encourages Billy and Tommy Maximoff to indulge their more chaotic instincts. Even when taking the twins trick-or-treating in dollar bin versions of their comics-accurate costumes, he still takes pleasure in using super-speed to help them steal all neighborhood’s candy. Yet, Pietro is also the one person in town with whom Wanda can freely confess her fears and secrets, given their past together in Sokovia and as subjects of Baron Von Strucker’s experiments. Letting Pietro misbehave a bit is, at the moment, a small price to pay for Wanda, who just wants to have a family again.

However, Pietro’s inclusion in the show’s “cast” also uniquely feels like something added without Wanda’s input. Beyond the “recasting” of Taylor-Johnson with Peters, he also seems oddly aware of the emotional archetype he’s meant to play, a trait that no other Westview resident, not even Vision, has demonstrated. At first this “I know you needed me” persona is enough for Wanda to treat his presence innocuously, especially since Pietro doesn’t seem interested in breaking the anomaly’s illusion or disrupting her newfound happiness. But when they take a moment to reflect on Wanda’s new life in the Westview town square, Pietro’s questions and comments not only start to feel meta but also inquisitive, as if he’s prodding her for some specific type of information.

It starts when Pietro asks where Wanda was hiding all the kids, noting the unusual absence of children across WandaVision’s previous episodes. Although Wanda initially expresses confusion about this statement, Pietro insists that he’s not mad or even condemning her actions as villainous since she’s “handled the ethical considerations of this scenario as best as you could,” keeping Westview’s families together and their personalities mostly similar despite being prisoners of her illusion. At this moment, though, Pietro seems more like a talent scout than a big brother, evaluating the scope of Wanda’s enhanced powers under the guise of a concerted sibling. Wanda doesn’t give him nor the audience any solid answers, and she even genuinely seems unaware about the anomaly’s origins, but her confession of feeling “completely alone” is arguably the most vulnerable the former Avenger has been with anyone on WandaVision to date.

While this conversation could be chalked up to a sibling just being curious, it does raise some red flags about Pietro. Given the comic stories WandaVision takes inspiration from, it’s long been theorized that the demon lord Mephisto is involved in this show somehow. In the source material, Wanda initially used fragments of Mephisto’s soul to give birth to Billy and Tommy, only for the demon to absorb the twins back into himself. Wanda was so traumatized by this incident that she had her memory wiped by Agatha Harkness — only to later regain them and cause Avengers Disassembled and House of M as a result. Thus, while Peters’ appearance on the show has caused mass speculation on whether WandaVision will introduce Mutants and X-Men to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s also possible that he’s a being like Mephisto in disguise trying to locate the source of Wanda’s power.

Marvel Studios clearly brought Quicksilver back with Peters’ face for a reason beyond licensed bragging rights, so implying that he’s the villain in disguise might not be that far off. Wanda’s abilities on WandaVision so far have shown her to be capable of rewriting matter, creating life from thin air and possibly turning Monica Rambeau’s DNA into that of a metahuman. However, despite all her nigh-omnipotent abilities in Westview’s sitcom bubble, she’s still vulnerable to those willing to let her indulge this fantasy without consequences, and right now, Pietro fits that shoulder devil part quite well. There’s clearly more to his role on the show than just a cameo, and, unlike classic sitcoms, this family reunion seems unlikely to resolve with a happy ending.

Written by Jac Schaeffer and directed by Matt Shakman, WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as Vision, Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Kathryn Hahn as Agnes. New episodes air Fridays on Disney+.
