We Need a New Point and Click Sam & Max Title

During the 90’s and early ‘oos, point and click adventure games were all over the place. There were many major franchises in that genre, but none were as big as those made by LucasArts, now Lucasfilm Games. Along with publisher Telltale, LucasArts made four point and click adventures featuring a buddy cop duo by the name of Sam & Max. Unfortunately, the genre has faded over the years, as have the duo. While Sam & Max are getting a new game, This Time It’s Virtual, this is a VR title.

Of course, VR games aren’t inherently bad, but some franchises don’t really suit that style. VR works best when it is immersing the player in a world where they need to see things up close, but Sam & Max works best from a third person perspective. It’s simply more entertaining to witness the duo react to the things happening around them. The journey of guiding Sam and Max through a colorful world works best when the player acts as that guiding hand, so putting players in the front seat takes something essential away from its charms. With that in mind, it’s time that the series returns to its roots with a new point and click entry.

It’s been a long time since the series’ last point and click game. While Telltale’s Sam & Max Save the World was remastered just last year, there hasn’t been a new entry since The Devil’s Playhouse in 2010. While the genre may not be as prevalent as it was in its heyday, there is still a market for these games on platforms like Steam. In fact, a new Sam & Max has the potential to revitalize interest in the genre, allowing other franchise to return as well — or encouraging developers to create new ones.

A revival could also allow the series to bring back previously abandoned content. Between Sam & Max Hit the Road and Sam & Max Save the World, there was another game planned, then canceled. Sam and Max: Freelance Police would have been LucasArts’ sequel to the first game, and it’s possible that the current rights holders could bring it back, or at least use some content from it.

Ultimately, a new Sam & Max game has a lot of potential, and its success could be what the point and click genre needs as a whole. If players — both those who have nostalgia for these old titles and newcomers — enjoy a new game in this style, it could encourage more developers to experience with the genre. These games were influential in their hey day; for instance, the characters often spoke directly to players while interacting with some objects. Who knows what creative minds could come up with for a new game, and that could generation fresh ways for players to interact with both the characters and the environment.

As a series, Sam and Max has provided players with all sorts of zany adventures and humor within its point and click formula. While any new game with these characters is reason for fans to be excited, the upcoming VR game is simply not as exciting as a new title with the old style. If it were to truly make its return, Sam & Max’s next adventure could be huge for the duo while breathing new life into a genre that sorely needs it.
