Principal photography has officially wrapped on Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.

Yankovic himself, who produced and co-wrote the biopic, shared a photo of a clapperboard that was used during filming. He captioned it, “We just finished SHOOT DAY #18, and ladies and gentlemen, that is officially a WRAP on WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story. Everybody involved with this movie absolutely killed it, and I can’t wait for the world to see this thing.”

In 2010, Yankovic and writer/director Eric Appel collaborated on a fake trailer for Weird, a melodramatic parody of musician biopics that starred Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul as Yankovic himself, along with Olivia Wilde, Gary Cole, Mary Steenburgen and Patton Oswalt. In January 2022, it was announced that Yankovic and Appel would be making a full feature based on the musician’s life with Daniel Radcliffe in the title role. “When my last movie UHF came out in 1989,” Yankovic said of the announcement, “I made a solemn vow to my fans that I would release a major motion picture every 33 years, like clockwork. I’m very happy to say we’re on schedule. And I am absolutely thrilled that Daniel Radcliffe will be portraying me in the film. I have no doubt whatsoever that this is the role future generations will remember him for.”

The description for Weird says the biopic “holds nothing back, exploring every facet of Yankovic’s life, from his meteoric rise to fame with early hits like ‘Eat It’ and ‘Like a Surgeon’ to his torrid celebrity love affairs and famously depraved lifestyle. Weird: The Al Yankovic Story takes audiences on a truly unbelievable journey through Yankovic’s life and career, from gifted child prodigy to the greatest musical legend of all time.” In addition to Radcliffe, the film will feature Evan Rachel Wood as Madonna, Rainn Wilson as radio broadcaster Dr. Demento and Julianne Nicholson and Toby Huss as Al’s parents, Mary and Nick Yankovic.

Weird is set to release on The Roku Channel. “There clearly aren’t enough biopic movies about famous musicians, and we were excited to shine a light on the incredibly true, unexaggerated story of Weird Al,” Roku Head of Original Scripted Programming Colin Davis said. “This is sincerely the ultimate combination of talent, creativity and friends, coming together to make something genuinely funny, and we could not be prouder to call this film a Roku Original.”

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story doesn’t yet have a release date.
