What We Do In The Shadows 5 Reasons Why Guillermo Will Betray The Vampires (& 5 Reasons He Won’t)

Since the season 1 finale of What We Do In The Shadows, there has been much speculation about whether Guillermo will remain a Familiar or eventually embrace his vampire hunting roots. The chances of either happening are both equally high, even though the season 2 finale hints at him leaning towards doing the latter.

Nevertheless, one should at least consider the plausibility behind either possibility and take into account his loyalty as well as his bloodline.

10 Won’t: Puts up with Nandor (and the Others)

What We Do In The Shadows 5 Reasons Why Guillermo Will Betray The Vampires (& 5 Reasons He Won’t)

Despite all the belittlement he’s had to face, Guillermo continues to remain loyal to a bunch of vampires that don’t even know his name. Day in and day out, Guillermo is there to be at their every beck and call for little to no reward. Indeed, the only actual reward that Guillermo has going for him is Nandor’s promise to turn him into a vampire. Whether this actually happens, though, remains to be seen, given how fickle Nandor has been about keeping this promise. Nevertheless, Guillermo has yet to leave him for good, and as evident in recent negotiations with Nandor, his reward now seems more plausible than ever. Not that it won’t cost more of his patience, though.

9 Will: Vampire Hunting is in his Blood (Literally)

The most glaring evidence that Gullermo may inevitably turn on his vampire allies is his vampire hunting heritage. As learned in season 1, Guillermo is actually a distant relative of the most notorious vampire hunter of all time: Abraham Van Helsing. Although Guillermo is initially skeptical of Van Helsing’s actual existence, he nevertheless learns by season 2 that vampire hunters do indeed exist within this universe.

What’s more, Guillermo frequently demonstrates throughout the series a natural talent for combating vampires, where he’s seen killing them both with and without intention. As much as Guillermo denies it, then, his heritage clearly matters here and could potentially be enough to change him.

8 Won’t: Doesn’t Necessarily Hate Nandor

Bloodline aside, though, Guillermo is still very loyal to the other vampires. Especially to his master Nandor, who’s displayed genuine (if not unintentional) concern for Guillermo’s wellbeing. Beyond that, though, he’s additionally started to realize Guillermo’s worth by adhering to his own demands. This, as a result, could mean that Nandor has finally begun to see Guillermo as more than just a Familiar (which could affect the likelihood of Guillermo’s betrayal). There’s still more that has to be done on Nandor’s part, of course, but he’s at least gotten better.

7 Will: Guillermo Saved the Vampire hunters

Although Guillermo had intended to simply spy on the vampire hunters that he had stumbled upon, his decision to nevertheless save them ultimately does more harm than good. Their mission, after all, is to literally hunt down vampires like Nandor, Lazlo, Nadja, and even Colin.

So, their very presence can only really mean trouble for the protagonists of this series. Obviously, though, this didn’t seem to matter because Guillermo saved them anyway. Putting into question, then, his integrity as a Familiar. A role which demands he protect his master, no what.

6 Won’t: Guillermo Saved them from Lilith and her Coven

During the episode where witches are finally introduced, Nandor, Lazlo, and Colin end up captured by Lilith and her coven (proving to be a difficult adversary). Their rescue then falls to Guillermo, who indeed manages to save their bacon. Unlike other instances, however, Guillermo isn’t as single-minded about rescuing them as he previously was. This may have to do with his success in negotiating with Nandor, where he’s perhaps realized that he doesn’t necessarily have to be so subservient. Regardless, Guillermo still chooses to rescue them rather than negotiate a deal that only benefited him. Demonstrating again the strength of his loyalty.

5 Will: Nandor Grew Suspicious of Guillermo

After learning that Guillermo killed a vampire in self-defense, Nandor immediately becomes suspicious of him, to which he wasn’t misguided for doing so. Guillermo does, after all, have plenty of incentive to kill Nandor, thanks to his reluctance to turn his Familiars into vampires.

Although this has recently changed, there’s still no guarantee that Nandor won’t fall back on old habits. A possibility that, perhaps, he himself acknowledges, given his suspicion. Could a rivalry emerge from this distrust then? There’s certainly potential for it.

4 Won’t: Killed Many a Vampire to Protect the Others

Then again, an obvious sign of Guillermo’s allegiance is the number of times he’s saved his allies from other vampires. Some, of which, actually included vampire assassins. This kind of sacrifice, overall, seems like a rarity among Familiars, who probably won’t go above and beyond, as Guillermo would, for a terrible master. Emphasizing, in turn, the unlikelihood of Guillermo betraying those who he has kept safe from fangs and sunlight alike. For this reason, Guillermo could simply continue to use his innate abilities to defend his friends.

3 Will: He’s Killed Many Vampires

But this still doesn’t detract from the fact that Guillermo is still killing vampires. Unintentional or not, him killing vampires obviously affects his trustworthiness because the very people he’s protecting are vampires themselves. Not only is there a chance that Guillermo may unintentionally kill one of his own, but an even greater one that he’ll attract the Vampiric Council’s attention. Putting into question, the actual worth of keeping Guillermo around. Is he worth the risks presented here? And are the others willingly to defend him, if needed? Perhaps not.

2 Won’t: Stopped the Vampiric Council (Twice)

What We Do In The Shadows 5 Reasons Why Guillermo Will Betray The Vampires (& 5 Reasons He Won’t)

Given the incredible authority that the Vampiric Council is portrayed to have, it stands to reason that there aren’t many who can stop them. And, indeed, there wasn’t much that stopped them from nearly killing the Staten Island vamps. The only real obstacle being Guillermo himself, who managed to thwart every one of the Council’s attempts. Thus, risking his own life by putting himself on the radar of a powerful organization. This, as such, reveals the extremes with which Guillermo is willing to go for individuals that he’d have to care about, in order to do so much for them.

1 Will: Guillermo Left When he Became Bloodthirsty

Even with all the good that Guillermo has done for the sake of his friends, though, there’s still one other glaring reason as to why he could eventually defect. And, that is his departure in the season 2 finale. Following his return, Guillermo begins to grow frustrated with the continued mistreatment of him, and thus decides to leave. Though Guillermo does this to protect his allies, his very acknowledgment confirms that his betrayal is genuinely possible. Having thought it necessary to leave before he dared to act on his bloodlust. So, what happens next? Will Guillermo resist the temptations of anger? Or will he finally say enough is enough?
