After years of waiting, fans of The Legend of Zelda series have finally been given a release date for Breath of the Wild’s sequel, as well its first-ever gameplay footage. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild broke the mold when it first launched in 2017. The Kingdom of Hyrule had never been experienced so extensively, or so organically, before. The rich flora and fauna that festooned each area, along with a largely compelling and fully narrated storyline, meant that Breath of the Wild quickly became a game that many could not put down, and nor did they want to.

When Nintendo revealed the news that there was a sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in development, fans were understandably delighted. Along with this announcement came a haunting trailer, that showed heroes Link and Princess Zelda discovering a corpse of Ganondorf beneath Hyrule Castle. This short clip alone opened the doors for endless theories and speculation from the Zelda community. It wasn’t clear what was going on, such as which incarnation of Ganondorf was lying beneath the castle or if Zelda could be a playable character on the release of Breath of the Wild 2. While those questions haven’t been neatly answered at E3 2021, it’s a little clearer now.

However, after this short teaser announcing the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, nothing more was heard about it for a long time. Eiji Aonuma, producer of The Legend of Zelda series, did tell fans at a Nintendo Direct in February 2021 that more information about Breath of the Wild 2 would be shared “this year”. He then went on to reveal that Skyward Sword is coming to Nintendo Switch in July 2021. However, the wait for more news on Breath of the Wild’s sequel is finally over. At its E3 Direct, Nintendo officially revealed that the sequel to Breath of the Wild will be releasing in 2022 for the Nintendo Switch. Along with this announcement, fans are treated to some brand-new gameplay footage for the sequel, which sees bokoblins making camp atop of an angry stone talus, someone who may (or may not) be Link warping through rock structures, and several new land masses hovering in the sky. Most sinisterly, Hyrule Castle can be seen crumbling before being lifted from the ground by a fiery aura.

This new reveal of more footage for the Breath of the Wild sequel is exciting news for patient fans. While Skyward Sword’s summer release is a fun inclusion, especially for those who have yet to play the first canonical game in the Zelda series timeline, having something completely new is much more in line with what fans truly wanted for the franchise’s anniversary. Sadly, there will be more of a wait than many were hoping for, but 2022 is at least a more concrete date than the Zelda community had the day prior to the gameplay reveal.

It is likely that more news about the sequel, such as its actual title, will be revealed as its 2022 release date gets closer. Until then, however, this reveal will surely be rewatched many times over by observant fans, and theories will soon be gracing the internet again as the anticipation for Breath of the Wild’s sequel is heightened once more.
