When Did The First Apple Watch Come Out & How Much Was It

Apple released the very first Apple Watch in April 2015, making the smart wearable over six years old. A lot has changed with the Apple Watch since that first model was released all those years ago, but many aspects have also remained intact.

Comparing the original Apple Watch with the most current model — the Apple Watch Series 6 — it’s impressive how similar the two devices are. The overall design is virtually unchanged, the Digital Crown has stuck around as a way to navigate the UI, many of the original watch faces are still present, and Apple has continued to use the same proprietary watch band system all these years later. Looking a bit deeper, however, it’s also easy to see how much progress has been made between now and the original Apple Watch. Built-in GPS and cellular connectivity have since been added, the display has gotten considerably larger, Apple’s introduced a ton of extra health features, and performance has drastically improved.

While the first Apple Watch was released in April 2015, its story actually began on September 9, 2014. That’s the day when Apple unveiled the Apple Watch for the very first time, doing so alongside the iPhone 6. Apple then opened pre-orders for the Apple Watch on April 10, 2015, offering it in the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Australia, Germany, France, China, Japan, and Hong Kong. Apple also started offering in-store previews of the watch that same day, allowing prospective buyers to go hands-on with the Apple Watch and see what it was all about. From there, Apple officially launched the first Apple Watch on April 24.

The First Apple Watch Cost Between $350 And $10,000

The Apple Watch Sport — the version of the first Apple Watch with an aluminum case — started at $349 for the smallest 38mm model. The next version was the aptly branded ‘Apple Watch,’ which was the variant with a stainless steel case. It started at $549 and went all the way up to $1,099 if purchased with a more premium band. Perhaps most famous from the original Apple Watch series is the Apple Watch Edition. This was an Apple Watch with an 18-karat gold case, featuring a slightly higher starting price of $10,000. To not much surprise, Apple ditched the 18-karat gold case the very next year when the Apple Watch Series 2 came out.

Outside of the ridiculous $10,000 model, pricing for the first Apple Watch is very similar to that of the Apple Watch Series 6. The 40mm version of the watch with an aluminum case is available for $399, with the stainless steel case starting at $699. Apple does have a more premium lineup of Hermès-branded watches these days, but the max price of $1,499 sounds like a bargain compared to the $10,000 Apple Watch Edition from 2015.

Considering how much has been added to the Apple Watch since the first model, it’s notable how similar pricing has stayed over the years. The first Apple Watch didn’t have built-in GPS, an always-on display, ECG reading, a blood oxygen sensor, sound monitoring, or full swim-proofing. Those are just a few of the things that have since been added to the Apple Watch Series 6, making the $50 price hike between the base models seem more than reasonable. The first Apple Watch may have lacked a few features and been overpriced, but it’s also the reason why the Apple Watch of today is as good as it is.
