Who Twitchs Most Influential Streamer Of 2020 Is

Twitch had its biggest year ever in 2020. More people tuned into the livestreaming platform than ever before, witnessing some of the most ridiculous livestream moments in recent memory. Among all of these highlights, there was one streamer who kickstarted Twitch’s most far-reaching trend and earns the title of Twitch’s most influential streamer of 2020.

Chance “Sodapoppin” Morris has been streaming on Twitch since 2012 and has amassed 6 million followers, primarily by playing World of Warcraft. This year, however, the streamer introduced mainstream Twitch to murder-mystery game Among Us. After Morris first played the indie title on his channel in mid-July, every major streamer picked up the game, and so began Among Us’ unexpected rise to popularity.

The social deduction game had laid dormant for years after its 2018 release. Only a handful of lesser-known content creators from Brazil, Mexico, and Korea had caught on to the game before its explosion in popularity in the U.S., according to a Kotaku report on how Among Us became so popular. Despite its obscurity, Morris agreed to play Among Us in a fateful July 19 stream with a Twitch Partnership team member known as Pluto.

He dove into his first round with complete strangers, using the game’s built-in chatroom to communicate with the players in his lobby instead of jumping onto the Discord voice-chat app, like most streamers do nowadays. His first Among Us stream was rough around the edges, but Morris had tapped into a game that would eventually let countless people have fun with their friends during a year where the coronavirus pandemic made in-person reunions impossible.

From there, Morris refined how he played the game on Twitch and invited other popular streamers, like Felix “xQc” Lengyel and Andy Milonakis, to join in on his sessions. This was the catalyst that propelled Among Us onto the computer and phone screens of millions of people around the world. Among Us developer Marcus Bromander told Kotaku how Pluto and Sodapoppin’s first game session led the title to spread across the internet like wildfire:

“‘It’s interesting to watch it spread through communities,’ said Bromander. ‘Like, Sodapoppin and xQc play it, and then they bring in one League of Legends streamer, and then suddenly a bunch of League of Legends streamers are playing, and then they cross over into Hearthstone streamers, and then a bunch of Hearthstone players are playing it.'”

Throughout August, September, October, and a majority of November, Among Us remained the most-watched game on Twitch. Monolithic streamers, like Richard Tyler “Ninja” Belvins and Imane “Pokimane” Anys, jumped onboard and got tens of millions of viewers hooked on the title. By September 28, InnerSloth announced the title had gone from being unknown in the U.S. to hosting 3 million players across all of its platforms, and it wouldn’t stop there.

On October 20, U.S. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez played Among Us with several popular streamers live on Twitch as a way to encourage Americans to vote in the 2020 presidential election. The broadcast became one of the most viewed streams in Twitch history, and at that moment, Among Us transcended the usual trajectory of games that become popular on the platform. When Sodapoppin first streamed Among Us, it began its transformation from a simple multiplayer game to a universal mode of communication that content creators, streamers, and now politicians use to reach millions online.

Since its peak popularity, Among Us’ viewership has dipped, but it continues to attract tens of thousands of viewers to Twitch every day, competing with AAA releases and legacy games like Minecraft and Grand Theft Auto 5. This was all thanks to Morris, who took a chance on an obscure game in the summer and turned it into one of 2020’s best multiplayer experiences.
