After Obi-Wan gets captured in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, Count Dooku visits the Jedi for a chat. During their conversation, Dooku not only reveals the existence of another Sith, but also explains his manipulation of the senate. But despite Obi-Wan not believing him, it was a risky move that could’ve ruined the Sith plans. So, what exactly was Dooku’s goal?
When Obi-Wan is in shackles, Dooku says, “What if I told you that the Republic is now under the control of a dark lord of the Sith?” H even goes into detail, revealing, “Hundreds of senators are now under the influence of a Sith Lord called Darth Sidious,” which gives away a secret Palpatine has been keeping his entire life. And yet, with all that crucial information freely given, Obi-Wan still ignores it.
Throughout the Prequel Trilogy, the Jedi are made out to be ignorant and problematic, showing that they’re no longer the Order they once were. And Obi-Wan’s moment with Dooku is just another that shows the Jedi’s weaknesses, as, even with Dooku offering up the Sith’s information on a silver platter, Obi-Wan still can’t fathom that the Jedi don’t know about it. And that’s ironic because, earlier in the movie, when the Jedi librarian Jocasta Nu refuses to believe the planet Kamino exists, Obi-Wan proves her wrong.
But despite the outcome, questions are still raised as to why Dooku revealed this information. Now, it’s entirely possible that, as with most things, it was all a part of Palpatine’s plan. He knew how blind the Jedi were to the truth, so planting this seed of doubt would slowly lead them to distrust the Republic and kick start the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.
However, on the flip side, Dooku may have wanted Obi-Wan on his side because, together, they could “destroy the Sith.” It could’ve even been Dooku’s attempt at continuing the Sith Rule of Two, where an apprentice kills their master and takes on a new Sith of their own. The only issue with that scenario is that Dooku had no care for the Sith and that his turn to the Dark Side was all his attempt at destroying corruption in the Republic.
With Dooku finding out about the crooked senate, he decided to join Palpatine for political reasons, not out of hatred. Even during Star Wars: The Clone Wars, his priorities are shaping politicians to his will and creating his version of order, whereas Palpatine just wanted absolute power and nothing else. So, it’s easy to believe that Dooku really meant what he said and hoped that he and Obi-Wan could wipe out all the corruption, including Sidious.
Regardless, the Jedi’s hubris proved to be their downfall. Dooku revealed a massive part of the Sith plan to them, but they couldn’t bear to question their judgment. And that paints Dooku as one of the most tragic Sith, as all he wanted was order and justice in the galaxy but ended up as nothing more than a pawn in Palpatine’s plan.
