Why Hawkeye Says Black Widow Killed Ronin In Endgame

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Hawkeye episode 3.

Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) claims that Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) killed Ronin during the events of Avengers: Endgame in Hawkeye — why? After the Infinity Saga, the Avengers’ resident marksman continues his MCU journey through his own TV series on Disney+. A big aspect of Hawkeye’s story is exploring Barton’s Ronin stint in Avengers: Endgame which was barely tackled in the 2019 Joe and Anthony Russo movie.

Unlike previous Marvel series, there are a lot more references to the bigger MCU in Hawkeye. This makes sense as Barton’s arc in the Infinity Saga, particularly in Avengers: Endgame, plays a big role in the show’s narrative. For starters, the series kicked off with a flashback to the Battle of New York from The Avengers, followed by a series of snippets from the character’s past appearances. There was also a tribute to the Avengers themselves via Rogers: The Musical. But the show’s biggest connection to the wider universe is rooted in Barton’s past as Ronin.

The events of Hawkeye were kickstarted when Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) wore the Ronin suit, effectively resurrecting the character. At this point, no one else knows that Barton operated as the masterless assassin in the five years after Thanos’ (Josh Brolin) snap in Avengers: Infinity War. Now, he is haunted by his past as Ronin’s old foes attempt to track him down for revenge. That includes Maya Lopez/Echo (Alaqua Cox) who was able to capture both Barton and Bishop and question them about the real identity of Ronin in Hawkeye episode 3 titled “Echoes.” To get them both out of trouble, Barton claimed that Natasha Romanoff killed Ronin. Maya called his bluff, but while it wasn’t exactly accurate, Barton wasn’t also totally lying. For him, Ronin gradually died when Nat reached out to him in Japan for the time heist in Avengers: Endgame. With the possibility of his family coming back, Barton had a reason to stop being the vigilante and retire his darker persona.

Later on, the pair were faced with a difficult decision in Vormir during the time heist. They needed to sacrifice one person to be able to acquire the Soul Stone and move forward with the mission. After an intense tussle, Nat won, and willingly died not just for the reverse snap, but to also give her friend a chance to reunite with his family. Nat’s sacrificial death further motivated Barton to redeem himself. Now, he’s committed to doing good and making the most time with his family as a way to make Black Widow’s Endgame death worth it. Overall, Black Widow was the first person who gave Barton a reason to leave his criminal life behind, inspiring him that his sins don’t need to define his future. Had it not been for her, Barton may haven’t been able to fully convince himself that he can redeem himself after his stint as Ronin.

Admittedly, Black Widow’s death in Avengers: Endgame was one of its most controversial aspects. Many argued that Barton should’ve been the one to give up his life in Vormir. While Marvel Studios can’t walk back on this creative decision, at least the MCU is finally fully recognizing the importance of Nat’s sacrifice, especially with regard to Hawkeye’s arc.
