Why Is The Avengers Rolex So Important In Hawkeye

Warning: Spoilers for Hawkeye episode 4, “Partners, Am I Right?”

The Avengers Rolex watch is proving to be an important element in the Hawkeye series and there are a few reasons why that might be. In episode 1, the watch was one of the items that had been taken from the ruins of the Avengers Compound to be sold in a black market auction, along with Ronin’s costume and sword. The Tracksuit Mafia raided the auction specifically for the watch, which Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) believed had been destroyed long ago. In Hawkeye episode 4, his wife Laura Barton (Linda Cardellini) helped him track down the watch to the apartment of Maya Lopez, a.k.a Echo (Alaqua Cox), after learning it was still around. But what makes the vintage Rolex so important?

There are still a lot of unknowns after Hawkeye episode 4. Although it’s strongly assumed by this point that Maya’s unnamed boss is in fact Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk, a.k.a Kingpin, that has not yet been confirmed, nor has the Disney+ series explored what exactly the crime boss’s goals are. Along with the supposed Kingpin’s influence behind the scenes, Maya also has her own agenda seeking vengeance for her father’s death at Ronin’s hands. It’s unclear just how much of her actions are her own, and how much is being dictated by Kingpin, but the fixation on the Avengers watch has had many viewers crafting theories about its potential connections elsewhere in the MCU.

Like the archer himself, the Hawkeye series has been reluctant to reveal too much too soon, slowly explaining details surrounding Hawkeye’s Ronin past that he’d hoped would stay buried. Hawkeye episode 4 revealed that his wife, Laura, has likely been more involved with Clint’s past work than the MCU has previously let on, and her concern over the Rolex watch’s existence raises some interesting questions. With so many seemingly disconnected threads, how do they all tie together, and what role does the watch have in it all?

Why Hawkeye’s Villain Wants The Avengers Watch

Why Is The Avengers Rolex So Important In Hawkeye

Supposing that Hawkeye’s main villain behind everything is indeed the crime boss Kingpin, there are a lot of potential reasons why he might want to get his hands on the Rolex. First and foremost, knowledge is power. When Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) asked Clint why exactly the watch was so important in Hawkeye episode 4, he simply said that it had belonged to a close friend and had the ability to expose their cover. This information must be big enough for Kingpin to risk media exposure in order to retrieve it, since the Tracksuit Mafia’s attack on the auction did not happen quietly. How exactly the watch could reveal this connection to its former owner is still unknown, but the existence of a secret transmitter on the device, which Laura used to track down its location in Maya’s apartment, means it could possess other hidden features containing the sensitive information. It’s also possible that Kingpin does not want the information himself, but intends to use it as blackmail against someone else—perhaps even against Clint. As a former SHIELD agent and Avenger, Hawkeye has connections to many powerful people, and could access a great number of government secrets himself.

Hawkeye’s Rolex Could Hide His Biggest Origin Reveal

Why Is The Avengers Rolex So Important In Hawkeye

One thing that’s abundantly clear after watching Hawkeye episode 4 is that the Rolex watch is in some way connected to Laura, even if only because she’s aware of Clint’s past exploits. The MCU has always been rather vague on Laura’s backstory and just how much she knows about Clint and his work, but the Hawkeye series has shown her playing a more active role, such as performing research for him that uncovered connections between Kate’s soon-to-be stepfather Jack Duquesne (Tony Dalton) and the Tracksuit Mafia, as well as the aforementioned finding Hawkeye’s Avengers watch. When on the phone with Clint in episode 4, Laura also briefly spoke in German—possibly just to ensure that the children listening in wouldn’t be able to follow the conversation—which raises some eyebrows as to why a farmer’s wife would have ever become fluent in the language. And in Hawkeye episode 2, Laura knew enough about espionage tactics to recognize that Clint was using one of Natasha’s favorite tricks for infiltration. These hints imply that there’s more to Laura than meets the eye. It’s even possible that she might have used to be the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and hero known as Mockingbird.

Mockingbird had previously been brought into the MCU in the previously canon but now likely no longer canon Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. series, but in the comics, the highly-skilled agent was romantically tied to Hawkeye, and the duo often fought together on missions. If Laura was once Mockingbird, her origin is likely connected to Hawkeye’s in some way that the Avengers watch might bring to light. She and Clint could have met doing S.H.I.E.L.D. or vigilante work until Laura decided to put that life behind her, adopting the persona of being nothing more than a farmer’s wife.

Who The Avengers Rolex Could Belong To

Many theories have been floating around as to who the Avengers Rolex belonged to. Since it had been retrieved from the Avengers Compound, some believed it was connected to a former Avenger like Tony Stark, who owned quite a few watches that he wore in his many MCU appearances. However, Clint saying that the watch could expose its former owner in Hawkeye episode 4 makes this possibility unlikely. In fact, it probably doesn’t belong to any of the Avengers since few of them really have secret identities or keep their faces hidden. The only one who did, Peter Parker/Spider-Man, lost that anonymity at the ending of Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Considering Maya’s obsession with the Ronin, it’s likely that the Rolex could have belonged to him. Information on it might connect Ronin to Clint and his family, thus putting the Bartons in danger. Yet, Clint also explained that the watch belonged to someone who had been out of the game a long time, which wouldn’t really apply here since he gave up the Ronin mantle comparatively recently. If his wife Laura did indeed used to be Mockingbird, then these details could certainly be referencing her. Whether she retired the Mockingbird identity on good terms or not, there are probably countless enemies she encountered during that time who would love the chance to track her down. However, it feels like a bit of a stretch that Kingpin would be concerned with a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent’s past, unless there’s something about her that Hawkeye has yet to explain.

Of course, these are far from the only characters that the Rolex watch could have belonged to. Some viewers have speculated that its owner was Nick Fury, the former head of S.H.I.E.L.D. who is secretly off-planet while the Skrull Talos assumes his identity on Earth. Obviously, Nick being off-world is something he wouldn’t want to get out, and if Clint is aware of his real whereabouts, he’d be invested in helping keep that secret. This theory doesn’t entirely line up, though, since Kingpin doesn’t have any clear connections to the S.H.I.E.L.D. director, unlike some other heroes, most notably Daredevil. After Kevin Feige’s confirmation that Daredevil would be returning to the MCU, it’s entirely possible that the blind lawyer is somehow connected to the watch, which would explain Kingpin’s fixation with it. Daredevil has long been connected to Kingpin as one of his greatest enemies in Marvel comics, and Hawkeye could have run into him at some point during his time as Ronin, or perhaps even while he still worked for S.H.I.E.L.D. Regardless of who Clint was referring to, their identity reveal should make for an exciting conclusion to Hawkeye’s story.
